Dear All:
With being on vacation and our son signing with the Kansas City Royals
baseball organization several weeks ago, needless to say that research on our
Latta's was sat on the back burner. Virginia, if you are in the Spokane area
this summer, check out the Spokane Indians, that's where he was assign too.
As most of you may know, I and Gene (my cousin) have a great grandmother,
Sarah Latta that we cannot tie in with any branch thus far. I read with great
interest the e-mail from Alex (branch 16) regarding the letter written by
William M. Latta here in Nashville in 1962. Alex, can I get a copy of this
letter? After recieving an e-mail from Paul giving me Bill Latta's address, I
e-mailed him hoping to shed some light on all the William M.'s and John
William's listed throughout Nashville since the early 1890's. In his return
letter, there was no mention of a letter written or his father having done
any research on the family. Copy of letter below:
Hi George,
Sorry, I haven't any info for you on your William Latta that lived on New
York Avenue in the early 1900's. Our family came to Nashville in 1943 when my
father moved here to work as a time inspector for the NC&St.L railway (later
the L&N and then the CSX). He was a Certified Master Watchmaker and inspected
the station clocks and the pocket watches of their crews. Sometime after
moving to Nashville he discovered some Latta's living in the Nashville area.
This may be the Latta family to which you refer, but to my knowledge there is
no direct relationship to our family. I am unsure of the origin of that Latta
family. Hope to talk to some of them someday.
Our family originally settled along Snow Creek near Santa Fe, Tennessee (9
miles northwest of Columbia) in 1817, moving there from Waxhaw, South
Carolina. My grandfather, John William Latta (after whom I am named) moved to
Union City, Tennessee in 1900 when he married. They raised three children and
farmed there until around 1929.
He went on to explain about his family and living on E. Morton Avenue here in
Nashville. His father died in 1985 and his mother in June of last year. I
will try and contact him later to see if he has his father's research.
Another thing mentioned on one e-mail was several death notices of Latta's
listed in the Nashville paper. We can obtain those very easily at the
Archives here in Nashville to see if they shed some light.
There hasn't been many stones lefted uncovered by I or my cousin Gene here in
Nashville regarding our Latta hertiage. I believe our answers should come
from futher research in Michigan and Canada. There's too much info pointing
north. The only works involving or mentions the Latta family in Tennessee is
housed in the manuscript section at the Archives compiled by Caroline Clark
Crockett, which mentions the Latta's of Maury County, Tennessee. Maybe Ruth
could shed some more light about them.
Hopefully, more up-dates later;
