Dear Ellen;

Thank you for that Web-Site. I hope many others will look at it. Someone gave it to me a year ago, and I spent some time on it. There was a John Latta that I'm sure is branch #16. He was a tobacco merchant in St. Johnstown in 1790. There were other Lattas mentioned, but I think they might be Br. #3, from Castlethird. It is interesting to read what the inbound and outbound ships were carrying. Some listed "Ballast", but this can be misleading, as the ballast on outbound ships might have been ginger beer or soda pop, and inbound might contain lumber, coal, etc. They were trading in both directions. On the East coast of "America" the torpedo shaped soda pop bottles have been collector's items for years. These were blown glass, usually embossed. The ginger beers were pottery, and demand a much higher price. I have seen one bottle go for $500. The ginger beers were also manufactured in N. America, and usually had an internal screw-thread, with a leather seal.

I hope I haven't bored anyone.

Alex. Latta, Br. #16
