Hi George, Glad to see you're still working on this. French Canada in
those days was what we know today as Quebec. Sometimes it was also called
"Lower Canada" in the census.

Around the time of the American Revolution and after, many loyalists left
the US and emigrated to Canada because of their British loyalties. Often
they settled in what are called the "Eastern" townships. You will find many
English sounding names in the southern part of Quebec, which might be a good
place to look.

Times were hard in Canada during the second half of the 1800s. Many French
Canadians -- and perhaps others -- left their farms and emigrated to the US.
Michigan was a popular place to settle in the 1860s and 1870s, at least for
the French Canadians whom I have studied. Perhaps some other Canadians
emigrated there at that time as well. Might they then have gone to Alabama
where they had relatives? Who knows?

There are many Quebec websites on the internet. Cyndi's list is a good
place to begin.

Keep us posted. Good luck!
