To add a little more about Canada. Until 1840 it existed as two seperate
British colonies; Upper Canada or Ontario (English) and Lower Canada or
Quebec (French). They were combined into one "Canada" in 1840. The British
North America Act of 1867 created the Canadian Confederation, brought in the
Maritines and was Canada's constitution until 1982. Interestingly, Labrador
did not become part of Canada until after WWII.

What American's call "Torys" are known in Canada as "Loyalist". It is
surreal to travel along the St Lawrence River in Ontario across from upstate
New York and see sign such as the " Loyalist Motel". The museum at Upper
Canada Village (a great place to visit) has on display uniform items of the
Provincial Corps; these were colonists that fought on the side of the Crown
in the American Revolution.

The "Eastern Townships" are that part of Quebec between the U.S. border and
the St Lawrence River.
