Virginia,
A couple points about Huntingdon Cnty, PA:
1.) In 1790 it included parts of what are now Blair, Cambria, Centre and
Clearfield Counties of Pennsylvania.
2.) Pennsylvania and Maryland had a serious border dispute (Mason & Dixon
survey) and the Governor of Pennsylvania wanted Scotch-Irish settlers for
the defense on the frontier against Indians and the intrusion of Maryland
along the southern border. Seems that the Quakers and Germans of the
province were passivist and would not take up arms for the defense. My
point is that Mathew Latta might have been born in a part of Pennsylvania
that was claimed by Maryland. Also the southern end of the Cumberland
Valley, the area of first intense Scotch-Irish settlement, extends down in
to Maryland in the Hagerstown area.
3.) An excellent book I found is "The Scotch-Irish of Colonial Pennsylvania"
by Wayland F. Dunaway, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1985. There is a section
on "Settlements in the Juniata Valley" that covers Huntingdon County.
