Subject: Immigrants to New Orleans

Here is a brief article about the immigrants at New Orleans, as appeared
in the Meridional on 11-13-1886.
"The report of the arrival of immigrants at New Orleans during October,
as made out in the Auditor's office, shows that there were 150 such
immigrants--117 males and 43 females. There were 70 from France, 33 from
Belgium, 16 from each Germany and England, 12 from Spain, 9 from Italy, 2
from Austria and 1 each from Greece and Cuba. There were 37 aliens not
immigrants, and 70 Unites States citizens among the arrivals."
This report shows that New Orleans was another major gateway to the
United States. Those Frenchmen were pouring in--so to speak--to the
French-speaking section of our country, probably following word-of-mouth
recommendations from those relatives and friends already over here.
