Subject: Re: [LAWASHIN] [LA-LHGS]What other questions should be addressedwith the relocation of nine cemeteries?

Thank you all for your participation
and input. There is still time to bring these questions to the USACE
Vicksburg District before the Draft EIS is published in September 2008.

Will the proposed action and the Draft EIS discuss the long-term
plan for the preservation of the nine historical cemeteries affected?Has
the State of Louisiana Department of Culture Recreation and Tourism,
Louisiana Unmarked Burial Sites Board been notified of the proposed
action and the Draft EIS?Will local historians, genealogist,
archaeologists and Save Our Cemeteries offer impact statements
concerning the nine cemeteries affected? What other cemeteries
in Louisiana have been relocated and where can I find more information
about the process of relocating a cemetery? It appears that 9
cemeteries in Washington Parish will be affected and possibly relocated
due to a reservior project.
Can anyone think of any other
obvious questions that should be addressed with the likelihood of nine
cemeteries requiring relocation?

I guess since this is still up in the air, I really believe that
someone should be paid to make the historical information available to
the public. I feel none of the cemeteries should be moved without the
documentation being complete on any information known about the
cemeteries. I feel like we are losing major genealogical research
material by allowing these cemeteries to be moved? Am I the only one
that feels this way? I realize this is a huge undertaking, but I feel
all need to be documented ASAP."

my area, (SW LA), a small cemetery had to be moved due to widening of
the highway (progress! ). The State did the moving of the graves, and
relocating them to another cemetery in the same community. Some family
members were present during the transfer; and everything worked out
just fine. It is now a far better situation, with perpetual care of the
graves. I, myself, read all the graves before the removal, although
this had previously been done.

The graves are now a part of another cemetery, and that one has also been recorded, before and after.

The important thing is to have a record, and to know where the graves will be placed, and to make that information available.

What is the name of the cemetery that was relocated in Southwest Louisiana due to road construction?

In what way did the State assist?  Did they oversee it?  Did they pay for it?  Were there any unmarked graves found?

Unless someone can volunteer to get specific data - GIS GPS locations
of this "unnamed" and "Smith" cemeteries it isn't likely that
transcriptions can be researched; that's if they exist.  Local names
and USGS names differ and oftentimes USGS does not have a name variant
- especially for "unknown"."
