J. A. Maxwell Pioneer Citizen Dies At Zion

Many Relatives And Friends Attend Last Rites of Esteemed Man Sunday Afternoon

Relatives and friends from far and near attended the funeral services conducted for J. A.
Maxwell, 81 years of age, who died Friday night, January 22, 1932, following four weeks of
illness.

Services were in charge of the Rev. Miles of Tullos, Sunday afternoon, January 24, at the
Zion Baptist Church, of which the deceased was a devout member. Interment was in the
Zion Cemetery.

Mr. Maxwell was a pioneer of this parish, having lived in the Zion Community practically
all his life. He was a progressive and esteemed farmer and a consecrated Christian, taking
a great interest in his church and community. His wife preceded him in death fourteen
years. He leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn his passing and it was said, "He
had no enemies."

The deceased is survived by six daughters, and five sons. They are: Mrs. Darius Smith,
Winnfield; Mrs. Tom Hodge, Rochelle; Mrs. O. H. Blackstock, and Mrs. H. Baulch, of
Monroe; Mrs. Bill Blackstock, Kilgore, Texas; Mrs. D. R. Belcher, Tullos, Rich, Henry, and
Jim Maxwell, of Georgetown; Will Maxwell, Winnfield; and Clay Maxwell of California.

He is also survived by forty-eight grandchildren, two of whom are sons of a deceased
daughter. They are Hilton and Marwell (Maxwell?) Groves of Groveton, Texas; and seven
great-great grandchildren.

Among the many relatives and friends attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. S. D.
Collins and Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Bice, Shreveport; Mr. and Mrs. V. G. Adams, Mr. and Mrs.
George Smith, Miss Lelah Smith and Miss Pinkie Lou Hodge of Hodge, La.; Mr. and Mrs.
W. D. Melton, Mr. and Mrs. Carter Keith, Amr. and Mrs. Wright Melton, Mrs. Olive
Wright, Johnnie Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Burkes, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith, of
Winnfield; Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Long, Mr. and Mrs. Will Long, Georgetown, La.; Mr. and
Mrs. Charley White, Selma; Mr. and Mrs. Rab, Tullos; Mr. and Mrs. Conley Long, Zion,
and Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Chandler, Winnfield.
