Dear JoAnne:
Thank you for your response, my first response from my first list
posting! I think it was the descendants of Major Thomas Lawrence, not my
Thos. Lawrence who had the money. A number of books I have come across go
into that line, which goes back to some very ancient English families
(Antrobus) and to royalty. So -- it would be nice to be cousins, but it might
be nicer to come from the other line? Books I have seen include Furman,
Robert, "The Daughters of Thomas Lawrence of Newton
L.I." Annals of Newton (can't recall author) and some other Lawrence books,
many concerned with a "lost fortune" in the Towneley line.
Send me the dates on your GG Grandmother Mary Lawrence, so if I find a
fit I can report. The family story was that Ann Eliza Lawrence, daughter of
Aaron was a cousin of Commander Lawrence who said Don't Give Up the Ship, but
there is also a story that she was of "Holland Dutch descent" which, unless
through one of her anonymous grandmothers, I don't find. Best wishes, Marie
