Dear friends,
I have a puzzle in my "unknown files" that I've working on, looking
for a connection to my Monmouth/Burlington/Ocean counties Lawrences. These
are three isolated records that appear to be connected. I'm open to
comments, suggestions and better yet, connections.
Previously I submitted to the Lawrence list a copy of a NJ Bible
record, exact location unknown, but names hint of belonging to the
aforementioned counties. The record was not hand written, but type set and,
therefore, probably a copy.
pg. 1 Contained the names of children belonging to a Jacob and Rebecca
Lawrence;
Joseph, born Aug. 12, 1795; Thomas, b. May 17, 1797; William, b. Jan. 16,
1800; Samuel, b. Oct 13, 1800; Riche, b. Jan. 12, 1803; and Lewis, b. March
8, 1805.
pg. 2 Contained children' births but no parents:
Jacob Merrit Lawrence, b. April 25, 1823; Rebecca Lawrence, b. Jan. 7, 1825;
Mary Lawrence, b. Feb. 18, 1829; Martha Ann Lawrence, b. Mar. 29, 1829;
Maria Louisa Lawrence, b. Feb. 6, 1832; Margaret Tilton Lawrence, b. Feb. 8,
1834; Lewis C. Lawrence, b. April 9, 1836; Sarah Ridgway Lawrence, b. July
29, 1838; and Rachel Emily Lawrence, b. Feb. 2, 1842
I also have in my unknowns file: Wm. Emley, J.P. m. on Aug. 15, 1822
Samuel LAWRENCE and Ann AYERS, both of Upper Freehold, Mon. Co., NJ. This
pair are not in the 1850 census for either Mon. or Ocean Counties. From the
m. date I set a circa birth date on the pair of about 1800.
In running the 1850 Federal census for Burlington county, for
Lawrences, I came across the following family group that I also put in my
unknowns:
Samuel Lawrence and family were found in the 1850 Federal census
living in the Borough of Bordentown, Burlington Co., NJ. The census was
taken on July 27, 1850 by someone whose name is unreadable. They are found
on line 6 of printed page 152, dwelling # 382, family # 496.
Samuel is a 49 yr. old carpenter, born in NJ, and wife Anie, also born in
NJ, is 50 yrs. old. They are living with
Rachel E. Lawrence, 8 yrs. old, therefore b. @1842
Rebecca Lawrence 83 yrs. old, therefore b. @1767
Martha Lawrence, 22 yrs. old, therefore b. @1828
Mary A.(?) Lawrence, 1 yr. old, therefore b. @1849
Rachel E. attended school in the past year. Rebecca cannot read or write.
Samuel's birth would be @1801 and Anie's @1800. Rebecca is assumed
to be Samuel's mother; this because of her age and surname. Martha at 22
yrs. old fits a daughter profile. Rachel E. and Mary A.(?) are somewhat
young to be children of Samuel and Anie. Because of their ages they could
be grandchildren of a deceased child of Samuel and Anie.
Rachel E. is significant. The 1850 Federal census for Burlington, Monmouth
and Ocean counties show only one child of that name and age--the one
residing with Samuel and Anie.
Am I being overly optimistic here or is there a connection between
these three records? For the three counties there is no other Samuel with
wife Ann. Samuel's birth date matches the Bible record as does Rachel
Emily's. Martha's birth date from the Bible record is off the census by one
year.
Also in the Burl. Co. census I found a Jacob M. Lawrence (with
family), age 23 or 25, setting ; and a single Margaret Lawrence,
age 15, setting b. @1835
