Hi Carolyn

Just got your message, hey another Lawrence researcher and that is just
great.

I have been at this family for a number of years now. At times it is most
difficult because of all the other Lawrence's, especially in New Jersey and
New York where these folks hung out. Also there are some very bogus
"genealogies" which show a lineage back to Sir Robert Lawrence and Ashton
Hall. They are all bogus and were done to try and hook into a vast fortune
that was supposed to be waiting in England. It was a very great fraud in
the 1800's and a lot of people were taken in by it. Now we come along a
hundred years later and get screwed up with false information.

So do you descend from John Lawrence? He was Richard Lawrence's brother (
our ancestor). I have done much work and do have an extract of the will you
mention. The name Edstel is derived from the maternal grandmother, Ann
Edsall who married John Lawrence (Sr) in Hackensack, New Jersey. I have yet
to find the birth for John & Jonathan and I believe they might be twins.
There is almost a 3 year gap from the time of John & Ann's wedding and the
baptism of Richard. I do not believe they lived in Hackensack, but
somewhere either on KLong Island or actually in New York City. Tracing John
Lawrence (Sr) is proving to be a lot of work and he is my brickwall. I am
trying to take the family back to Britain but no luck so far.

Do tell me waht else you have and how I may help you. I warn you I have a
lot of information, especially on Richard who was a Loyalist and died in
Britain after the Revolution ( he was in prison for quite a time and
obviously got tuberculosis ) He died in Kent County, after pleading with the
Government for compensation for his lossess in America. I can find no trace
of family at the place where he died and there is no tombstone to refer to.
The church where he is buried was bombed very heavily during WW2 so there
are no old graves left. The church register does not reveal anything I did
not already know. It just said he was from Staten Island, New York.

There are several of us researching and we found a new cousin just last
month, and now maybe you are another.

Do contact me again soon.

Regards

Eileen

This seems to be the right one. John Lawrence's daughter, Catherine,
marries John Van Pelt. They reside in Staten Island, NY. I have a copy of a
will, dated January 24 1767, where John Lawrence, names his wife
Catherine, children Ann, Catherine, Nicholas and Edstel. Edstel is a
strange name, probably for Frances Edsail. The spelling often gets changed.
The will names his brother Richard Lawrence executor. Another will, that of
Johathan Lawrence, also of Staten Island, makes his brother Richard Lawrence
executor. This will was dated January 17, 1767.
