Dear Lawson cousins,
I'm new to mailing lists so please excuse any inadequacies. Several of
you wanted information on Hawkins Co, TN Lawsons. I'll try to answer as
best I can.
First, I received a message from Bonnie in NC ()
which should help you, Susie. If you also received it, sorry for
repeating it. Bonnie states David Lawson m. Sarah Lawrence, her family
from western NC, in Hawkins Co in 1823. She says per Ann Moore David's
children were James m. first Lanza Thompson; 2nd Frances Spurlock;
Joseph (b. 1824) m. Lucinda Pauley (Bonnie's line); John m. Lucretia
Cooper; William b. 1825 m. Julia Conley first and 2nd m. Roxlena
Roberts. The family moved to Putnam Co, WV 1840-1850.
If this is a help to you, give Bonnie a big thanks! I didn't have any
info on David and Sarah.
Re Burrell Lawson, in the book Families of Hawkins Co, TN 1786-1994,
published by the Hawkins Co Historical and Genealogical Society there is
an article which states: Burrell Lawson b. 1790 NC d. 1840 Hawkins Co,
TN married Elizabeth or Ellender ? They had one known son, James b.
1815 in Hawkins Co who died Dec 7, 1875 in Marshall Co, KY. James' wife
was Nancy ? b. 1815 in Hawkins, died 1851 in Hancock Co, TN. Children
were Samuel, b. 1831 Hawkins Co. married Margaret Rider in Marshall Co,
KY; Ellender b. 1835 Hawkins, died 1869/70 in Marshall Co; Sarah b. 1838
in Hawkins m. James Collie in Marshall Co, KY; Jane b. 1842 in Hawkins;
Mary also born 1842; Margaret b. 1846 in Hawkins Co, TN m. John
Cunningham in Marshall Co, KY; John b. 1849 in Hawkins Co, TN.
In the same book, another article which states: Martin Lawson, buried
in Eidson cemetery, is believed to be the son of Burrell Lawson of
Stokes Co, NC. Martin came to Hawkins Co with his family @1820. Could
Martin be an uncle of this James Lawson, brother of James' father
Burrell and Burrell and Martin be sons of Burrell Lawson of NC? I have
just recently learned that my Jonas Lawson b. @1800 may have come from
Stokes Co, NC so I am interested on finding out what I can on early
Lawsons there. I have the names of Martin's children if anyone is
interested.
Several months ago I talked to Carolyn Lawson Rhoton in Surgoinsville,
TN. She told me there is an article written by a lady which is at the
historical society. In essence, the article states the first Lawsons to
America came over in the 1630's: William and a brother. They captained
a ship which travelled between VA and England. Eventually two other
brothers came over also.
I found some Lawsons on the quit rent rolls 1704 VA: Claudy Lawson
(Essex Co); H. Coll (Princess Anne); John (York Co); John and Nicholas
(Parish of St. Peters and St. Paul).
FHC Film 6046679 has Thomas Tundal 400 acres in Henrico Co, VA on north
side of James River adjacent Jonas Lawson on Jun 6, 1727.
An email correspondent told me there was a Jonas Lawson who left a will
in Stokes Co, NC naming a son Jonas, among others. Does anyone know
more?
On the 1782 Pittsylvania Co, VA tax list are Jonas, John and Ambrose
Lawson (this per article at the Hawkins Co, TN historical society
Carolyn told me about). Also, per the article 4 Lawson brothers or
cousins settled in the Holstein River area late 1700's-early 1800's.
Two settled to the north in Lee Co, VA and two to the south in Hawkins
Co, TN.
I apologize in advance if this message was only supposed to be sent to
the particular individuals who wrote me. I realize it's long, but I
hope it helps someone. Mary Rollis (Tacoma, WA)
