Subject: ADMIN: hints on missing mail
Date: Thu, 2 Feb 2006 15:07:04 EST
Many lists have encountered problems recently as a result of RootsWeb making
changes in its server. This resulted in a new IP (Internet Protocol)
address for RootsWeb. Various servers (most notably AOL) blocked the new address,
assuming that the large volume of e-mails meant that it was a spammer.
This situation has now been resolved -- at least with AOL. Other ISP's may
still be blocking RootsWeb mail until the RW server can be "whitelisted".
To help prevent future such occurrences, I would like to offer a few
suggestions.
1. If you don't receive any mail from the list for several days, check the
"threaded archives" for this list at RW. Look at the RW homepage under
Mailing Lists for "Threaded Archives". This will show you all posts in the current
month by subject and date. You can select any previous month as well.
2. Look at the possibility of establishing alternate (FREE) e-mail
addresses at Yahoo.com or hotmail.com. Google also has free gmail accounts, but they
seem to be slightly more difficult to use. Then subscribe to your lists
from these accounts as well; there's nothing wrong with being subscribed to the
same list from different addresses. The only downside is that frequently
such accounts will have to be accessed every few weeks or they will be closed.
3. If you find that your ISP has been blocking RootsWeb mail, please
contact me directly -- not by posting to this list -- and I'll bring the situation
to the attention of the people at RootsWeb. They are usually able to help.
However, be sure that you know that it isn't something that's happening at
your computer. For example, Earthlink has a very strong anti-spam program
that, to the best of my knowledge, needs to be configured to allow all the mail
that you want to reach you.
4. When mail that you want to receive is being blocked by your ISP,
complain to their customer service representative. If you do this by e-mail, please
consider sending me a copy as well.
