I wholeheartedly agree that people need more knowledge about finding their
own names, rather than just submitting them to the temple. However, before
deciding what to teach in a FH Sunday School class, I think it is important
to understand the intended audience and purpose of such a class. The
purpose can be understood by looking at the prescribed curriculum for the
class. The manuals specifically state that the white book (A Member's
Guide to Temple and Family History Work) is to be the curriculum or
"textbook." However, this does not preclude the use of other sources, as
long as they do not replace the white book, but are used as supplements to
the curriculum prescribed by those in authority.
A review of the manual indicates that the intended audience is composed of
people with little or no knowledge of genealogy. It even talks about
gaining a desire to do the work. So people that are already involved in
genealogy and "think" they know what they are doing may not be appropriate
for this class. People like this may be better off in assisting with the
teaching of the class. They say you learn more when you are the teacher
rather than the student.
It seems reasonable to assume that the class should first provide the
students with spiritual experiences that will increase their desire to do
genealogy. Then they should be given the basic information that they need
to begin doing it. I would also consider it necessary that each student
experience some success before the class is over. Most people will be able
to at least find a relative in the Social Security Death Index and obtain a
death record in that time frame. Then they can get an obituary and
cemetery records and possibly even visit the grave. With this as a base,
they will then come to the FHC on their own, and the excitement will feed
on itself.

Elaine and others,
I'm the new Trainer in our FHC.... They have also asked me to serve as
teacher for the Sunday (go to meeting, grin) Class.
I started out with the VERY BASICS! Then moved on into the white book. We
have a couple of ladies here that feel it was TOTALLY inapporiate of me to
start with the basics on SUNDAY of all days! Well, I have a class I offer
on Thursday.. free to all walking and they won't take the time to come to
those! So when are they to learn HOW to do their research? This FHL has
been in our little Phase 2 building for 5 years.. non of the workers knew
how to find NEW names.. only send to the Temple what they had been given.
Trust me, none of them missed the classes on HOW to FILL out the forms..
but
now that we are in the WHITE BOOK.. very few show up (after they Demanded
my
Director inform me that is the ONLY book I can teach from.) hum????
What I'd like to see here on the list this week (if possible) is WHAT DO
YOU
TEACH? just an outline. I'm a professional Genealogist and I feel it's
important to TEACH them how to find... not just hand the names over. My
Director is most wonderful and excited to have someone willing to TEACH! I
just need to be able to show her what other wards are doing so she can see
there is more than the WHITE BOOK.
Thank you... (Please don't include my words when you reply, as I'm
planning
to print them for our Director and HPGL.)
