Subject: [LDS-WC-L] Living Persons in Pedigree Resource File submission
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 10:07:00 -0600
I'm finally getting close to doing my first Pedigree Resource File
(PRF) submission. I looked at the instructions, and they left me with
a big concern.
First of all, here are ALL of the conditions which anyone submitting a
GEDCOM file for inclusion in PRF must agree to. Please note that I
copied this directly from www.familysearch.org
Please see my questions below.
[][]
To submit your genealogy to FamilySearch Internet, you must agree to
these conditions:
1. You have received permission from all living persons named in your
submission to send their information to FamilySearch Internet.
2. You give us permission to publish your name and address as the
contributor of the information you submitted. This helps others to
coordinate research with you.
3. You give us permission to use, copy, modify, and distribute any of
the information included in your submission without compensation and
in any form we feel appropriate. You also give us permission to use
information from your submission to create new databases.
4. You affirm that you have the right to give us permission to use the
information in your submission, as described in these conditions. You
accept legal responsibility for any permitted use made of the
information you provide.
5. You agree that we are not responsible for any alteration, loss,
damage, or corruption to your submission.
6. You agree that once you submit your genealogy to us, it becomes our
property and cannot be retracted or returned. However, this does not
limit your right to publish, sell, or give the information you submit
to others.
[][]
Please refer to number 1: "You have received permission from all
living persons named in your submission to send their information to
FamilySearch Internet."
I totally agree that all of these conditions are appropriate and
necessary. I totally agree that we MUST NOT submit the names and
information about living persons to PRF without their permission.
BUT, to get permission of all the living persons in my PAF files would
be next to impossible. So, the next best thing is to remove them.
But, that is, if not impossible, really quite difficult. I could make
a copy of my PAF file and remove living individuals from that before
creating a GEDCOM file for submission, but my PAF file has hundreds of
living persons in it. I have a number of questions that I hope those
who know PAF better than I do can answer.
QUESTION #1. Does PAF have a way to mark living persons that will
allow you to exclude them?
QUESTION #2. Is there a Utility that will do this?
This could probably be done with Advanced Focus Filter, but I (and I
suspect others) really don't understand this feature very well, and I
certainly don't know how to create a file that includes ONLY those
that are dead or that were born at least 110 years ago.
QUESTION #3. How do I create such a list?
QUESTION #4. To create such a list, what do I do about those who are
dead, but for whom I don't yet have a death date?
QUESTION #5. To use this, would I have to enter the word "DEAD" in
the death date in order to exclude them in a filtered list?
QUESTION #6. If I enter the word DEAD, how would I then create a list
of everyone that has SOME DATA in the Death Date field?
QUESTION #7. Would entering "DEAD" be the same as a Date for creating
such a list?
QUESTION #8. Are there other problems regarding living persons in a
GEDCOM file that I haven't asked?
QUESTION #9. I have seen some PRF files that have something like:
"Female living" and have nothing else. How is this done?
Lots of questions, but I hope someone can help. I suspect that others
may have the same questions.
