Hello. I'm Sis. Joey Hall, Family History Consultant for the Eldorado Second
Ward, Tule Springs Stake, in North Las Vegas, Nevada. I have had my calling
since September, and served on our ward's Family History Committee for about
a year before that. I have been fascinated by genealogy my whole life, but
have only been seriously involved in doing research for the last 3 years.
I'm 33 and have three children ranging from 9 years old to one due in
October.
I have spent the last few months banging my head against the Stake Center's
cinderblock walls trying to figure out a way to convince people that doing
their genealogy is not only not boring, but is so rewarding that it is
addictive. I used to take tour groups from our ward downtown to one of the
functioning Family History Centers, but it was hard to get people to show
up. Our bishopric is amused by my calling and loves to hear stories about
members being involved in the work, but they have not wanted to get involved
themselves. I have been frustrated by how little actual direction came with
this calling, and have been praying for help to know what to do and how to
go about getting the work done. We have no one serving as Stake Family
History Consultant, and our ward's program is not well defined, so I have
felt very lost.
Then I found you!! I spent the morning reading the archives from this mail
list and realized that my challenges are 1) not unique, 2) not likely to
change without serious effort, and 3) not a good enough reason not to do my
best trying to get the work done as it should be. You were also a good
reminder that this is the Lord's work, and that He will open doors that need
opening.
WOW! I can't thank you enough for the encouragement, the suggestions for
starting a successful program, and the many messages regarding what the
program should be like and how to go about getting the support I need. I
printed off a stack of your letters that was 2 inches thick and organized
them by subject so I can refer to them later. I also printed off the
goal-setting sheets and set some goals for myself. I have phoned my HPGL to
schedule regular appointments where he and I can discuss the progress we're
making and decide what other work needs to be done. I also spent about an
hour on the phone calling ward members to see how their personal family
history work was going, and taking notes about their comments (a summary of
which will be included on my reports to the HPGL). Those of you who provided
this help through your postings - please accept my warmest thanks for your
help!
I'm as excited as I was the first day I logged onto the FamilySearch
internet site! Like a kid in a candy shop now that I have found you. Thanks
again for everything. I can't wait to get to know you better as we serve
together in this calling all over the world.
Joey
