Doris;
I find PAF Pal most useful in two situations. First is when I am
using a split screen such as with Match/Merge or working between two PAF
databases. Screen space is at a premium. It is then useful to be able
to temporarily abbreviate the names of US states, Canadian provinces and
UK counties and also to remove USA. PAF Pal does this. When I am
finished, I can restore the database to its formal "full dress uniform"
condition by expanding the abbreviations and replacing the USA.
The second situation is when I am working helping someone to upgrade a
database from an earlier version of PAF, or any other genealogical
database. Often then they have used abbreviations for states. I can
change that entire database to meet the current standard of (almost) no
abbreviations. And this all only takes a few seconds!
PAF Pal costs $18.00 (U.S.) postage included within the US (and
Canada?). It is also available for use in a Family History Center on all
of the computers in that center (or centre -- Oh yes, I lived in North
Yorkshire for almost three years -- an experience that I treasure) A
full description of its capabilities follows:
PAF Pal operates on a PAF 5 database to accomplish the following
* Works from within PAF 5.x
* Search and replace parts of names
* Search and Replace LDS temple codes
* Remove Submitted or Sub dates from LDS date fields
* Clear Custom ID fields, Ancestral File Numbers or all LDS fields
* When clearing fields or searching/replacing, reports of which records
are changed can be created.
* Enable additional Internet searches (Ancestry.com, Genealogy.com and
RootsWeb.com)
* Remove forgotten passwords from PAF 5
* In a single step you can abbreviate USA states, Canadian provinces
and/or Great Britain county places.
* Expand abbreviations for USA states, Canadian provinces and/or Great
Britain counties
*.Automatically add or remove "USA" or "U.S.A." from places in the United
States of America
* Display or print statistics about the people in your file.
* Print lists, by date, of records that have been changed or records that
have been submitted to Ancestral File
* Enables the use of *.OUP files created by TempleReady for Windows to
transfer temples and ordinance dates found by TempleReady for Windows
After PAF Pal is installed it can be run from within PAF. It adds itself
to the Tools menu.
