Subject: [LDS-WC-L] Family Bible is NOT a certain source
Date: Wed, 29 May 2002 12:47:08 -0700

All;

There was a time when I thought that entries in a family bible were
some of the most accurate available. Experience has taught me otherwise.
Entries in a family bible are often made long after the event.

For example, I was given photocopies of a family bible owned by
Richard Halliday (yes, Richard Halliday, my second great-grandfather).
We expected the entries to be very accurate since he had entered the
birth day and time (in some cases to the nearest fifteen minutes). When
we compared the bible information to the information from official
sources such as civil registration and parish registers we found numerous
errors in the dates and places. The names were correct and the
relationships were also.

Sigh! . . . Life is not always what we expect.

Genealogy without documented sources is little better than gossip.
