The answer is "it depends". The IGI record may not have had a film number but it may have a batch number. There is a microfiche or booklet that will help translate that into a film number. However
keep in mind that the IGI is made up of records from several different systems used at different times,
there may be some that the reference information was lost on. If Judy would share the specific person/marriage so that others could see it, we might be able to give a better answer.

Hello list,
I received this email on another list I subscribe to, and thought I would pass it on to
our list, hoping someone can answer her question. Please respond to the address below,
and not to this list.
Thanks for your help,

Subject: [GERmanRUSsian] IGI question
To:
I was out on FamilySearch today and found some people on the IGI. When it's a
marriage record, it will give me a spouse but no film #. If I go to an LDS
facility, will their records show more, or give me a place to look for more
information. Also, on those birth or marriage records where a film # is
given, in general, how much more is on the film? Thanks.
Judy
