Hi folks,
I need to clarify a statement that I made a few days ago. I believe I
stated it accurately, but I'm getting emails indicating that I've been
misunderstood, so I obviously didn't state it specifically enough. Here is
the statement:
"You then mention two children not 'linked' to them. Are you searching the
IGI? I don't believe there
would be any linking of these records in the IGI. They would be individual
membership records put into the file at the time of the individual's death.
Since work for multiple family members was not all being done in the same
'submission', there wouldn't be links involved."
The Internet version of the IGI does have linkages in some of the records,
and I expect that those links will increase with time. When I said I didn't
believe there would be any linking of "these" records in the IGI, I was
referring to the records being submitted from the deceased members file.
You'll notice the next couple of sentences I was trying to explain that the
membership records are individual submissions and not a family submission
because they go into the file one at a time as people pass away. When
submissions go in as a family with linkages as part of the submission, I
believe those links are preserved in the IGI. However, my experience has
been that even though the deceased members file has names of all of the
family relationships, and even though membership records are all linked in
the main membership database, I have not found that the links are maintained
for the membership records submitted to the IGI. For example, my
grandparents are both deceased, and their membership records have been
submitted to the IGI. Their son, my uncle, has also passed away, and his
membership record is in the IGI. There are no linkages between any of the
members of this family in the IGI, even though all related names are given
and the linkages were clearly existing in the membership file before they
went into the deceased members file.
I hope this explanation makes sense. Yes, there are linkages in the IGI,
but I have not found links maintained for entries coming from the deceased
members file. Has anyone found differently for their deceased member
relatives? I am very interested to know if my experience with this is just
too limited. Maybe others have found something different.
Also, Pam Ingermanson has emailed me to indicate that she heard the
deceased member file is downloaded to the IGI once a year. I am putting
that out as information to consider, and it is likely correct, but I'm
headed out of town and don't have time to verify anything today. I hope
these explanations are helpful, and I'm sorry if I caused confusion on this.
Have a good day,
Jill Crandell
