Hi my name is Tomi
I am trying to find my G-G-G-Grandma Sarah Sally Birchfied, it has been
passed down through generations that she and her daughter Nancy was working
around there cabin and mask men rode up on horse's and attacked them because
they were believed to be Indian. The mask men stangled Nancy and left her
for dead and the hung Sarah Sally.
When my G-G-Grandma woke up her mother was dead hanging from the rafters.
Nancy was 10 years old.
Sarah Sally Birchfield was born in North Carolina in the early 1820's. was
found on the Hawkins Co. TN cenus in 1860 along with daughters Mary, Delpha
and Caroline. My G-G-Grandma Nancy was born in 1861 in VA.
G-G-Grandma Nancy married Elijah Gay and settled in KY.
So please if any of this fits please Email Me
Help me find my Indian Heritage
Thank You
Tomi

Hi Tomi, it's great to hear from you. I don't know how much help I can be
but I will try to steer you to some of the info I've found on the computer.
I have very little on Sarah Sally Birchfield and her daughter Nancy. I
believe Sarah was born in Cades Cove, Tennessee. It was considered Blount
County in those days. I don't have my info with me at the moment so I don't
have the dates or the fathers name, but I will get back to you on that as
soon as I can.
Try looking for Mary Birchfield. She was married to Oowahooskee. They were
from N. Carolina. Their sons moved into Cades Cove and most of the family
followed. Mary had a sister Lydia. She was scalped by Indians at a young age
and Mary was taken. Lydia lived and raised a family and lived to a very old
age. Robert Birchfield was one of Mary and Oowahooskee's sons, he is
mentioned as one of the first settler's of Cades Cove.
Check the boards for Cherokee Indians on this web site. You will find lots
of info on this family and I think there is a Birchfield forum you should
look at.
If you can get hold of any books written about Cades Cove you will discover
so much info on this family. Also, some libraries carry the Heritage books.
If you can find one for Blount County Tennessee, you will have lots of
reading.
Good luck. I would love to keep sharing info with you. I will get you those
names and dates as soon as I can and send them your way.
Susan

You are very welcome. Here are the names and dates I promised you. I hope
this Sarah Sally Birchfield is the same one you are looking for.
Sarah Sally was born in 1827 in N. Carolina and died about 1871. Spouse
unknown. She had 4 children: Mary-no dates,: Caroline, no dates: Delpha, no
dates: and Nancy-born in 1861 in Virginia.
Sally's father was Nathaniel Birchfield-born 1776 in N. Carolina and married
Anna McKinney. She was born in 1785. Nathaniel died in Limestone Cove,
Unicoi Co., Tennessee.
This was all from Ancestry.com. But on another contact someone listed a
Sarah Sally Birchfield as daughter of Joseph Birchfield and Susannah
Holloway. It's been my experience that everyone's info varies here and there
and I've had a very hard time trying to sort through it all and find out
what is correct. This family has been very hard to put together and
extremely hard to tie Oowahooskee in to it.
A little more on Oowahooskee: He was a full-blooded chief. He took a
Cherokee Indian Reservation Grant, No. 198, July 21, 1819. His name is on
the 1817 Old Settler's Roll. Supposedly he was taken off the reservation and
sent by flat boats to Arkansas and then on to Oklahoma. I'm not sure about
this, I also read that he went to Old Mexico (Texas). He had three sons:
John Noah Birchfield(Burchfield), Robert, and Nathaniel.
I hope this gives you something to work with. I understand there is a copy
in the Blount County, Tennessee courthouse of the above grant. I haven't
gotten hold of that yet. Good luck, hope to hear back from you soon.
