This "Peter Lebeck" obviously and Americanized version of French name Lebeque/Lebegue, is believed to have been on a trapping expedition from middle Canada that entered the US through present day MI, then went West and Southwest. In 1898 in response to the question if he was really enterned there, his grave was dug up and his remains were found, buckskins and all. He was re-buried in a coffin and still rests at Ft. Tejon State Historic Park, Kern County, CA. According to legend and eye-witnesses, Peter Lebeck is said to occasionally walk the grounds dressed in his buckskins.
