Subject: [LEE-L] Trash mail
Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 23:11:01 EDT
My daughter does not subscribe to any mailing lists and she gets 15 to 30
trash e-mails a day! So I'm sure that Rootsweb is not the place where her
address was picked up. She does have AOL.
We've noticed that the majority of her trash mail now comes from an AOL
address. And there is a new scam going on that tricks people into giving
their AOL passwords to people who then use it to send trash mail advertising
porn. My daughter gets at least one e-mail a day with the following message:
"AOL apologizes for this inconvenience and we do asure better and faster
service for each and everyone of our members. As a result of this, the Staff
at AOL is proud to announce that during our short update on your account,
members who submit their information promptly will receive one month FREE
ofInternet Access!Aol Staff Click here" (I deliberately am not including
the web site.)
Out of curiousity, I went to this web site under a temporary user name and
discovered that it is a page requesting your AOL password so that they can
credit your account. HA! So when people enter that password, they have
given permission to the trash e-mailers to use their screen name to send more
junk out.
I've complained to AOL about this, but the mail continues to escalate and
that web page is still up.
