Hi Ed,
Thanks for the welcome. My 2nd cousin did relay that story about William C. Lee and the family division regarding the estate of William Carson Lee. Apparently he was not well regarded on either side of the family. I am getting papers from him but I do not recall if any relate to the dispute. I have some relatives in Dallas and am planning to visit in the near future. I will post if anything relating to the court case pops up.
Regards,
Jim Betancourt

Jim, welcome to the group. Yes, the heritage of Richard Lee of Buckingham
County is a hairy mess that has not been sorted out and may never be given the
DNA results until someone develops a data base that does comparisons of
everyone in the world. On your particular line, the information that I have is
that William C. Lee, Jr. was born about 1832 and married Eliza McSpadden in
Van Zandt County, TX on Aug. 14, 1856. I know that there is at least one other
descendant of theirs in the group who may have more information. I do not
have a date of death for either of them but I believe he outlived her. There
was an acrimonious division between the surviving children of William C. Sr.
after his death pitting the McSpadden connected children against the others
but the court records regarding this dispute cannot be found. Like you, I
live in California and can not get to Kaufman County very easily to dig further.

Obvioulsy, Richard Sr. is a whole other issue and I see that there is much
debate, so I will not get into it this thread, but would eventually like to
join the debate.
