Thanks to George Smith for his update on the decision concerning the
availability of the finding aids on the internet. The url for the download
page is http://www.lrfhs.freeserve.co.uk/lrfhsdownloads.html .
The outcome of the committee is rather less than I had hope for, but more
than I expected. However, I am sure that this additional resource will prove
useful for those researching less common names (any HORNBUCKLES out there?).
Having downloaded the files, someone researching HILL and WHITE (for
example) would still have to purchase all 27 volumes of the 1851 Census
Index
I had hoped that the Census Indexes would be published, allowing researchers
to identify their ancestors and then pay for extracts of the complete
entries but you all know this. Where do we go from here? Well, it remains in
our own hands. I would urge anyone who has transcribed sections of Census,
Parish Registers etc to make them available on the web. We can then create a
repository of genealogy data for use by all.
Many subscribers to this list will also be members of other Family History
Societies, it may be an idea for listers to write to these other societies
and request that they publish their indexes on the web in the hope that they
may see the situation differently.
When this discussion started, many suggestions were made as to how we could
collaborate to provide our own resources, perhaps we need to continue.
Before this list gets flooded with ideas, perhaps we could hear from the
listowner as to whether there would be any objections or if we should find
another forum to discuss this subject.
I may have been wrong to publish the 1851 Census Indexes, but at least we
have achieved something, with the hope of more to come.
Finally, thank you to the L&RFHS for meeting us half-way, perhaps you would
review your decision from time to time and maybe, just maybe you may see it
differently in the future.
