Subject: [LEI] SKERRITT (SKERRETT) or SKELLITT (SKELLETT)
Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2001 17:06:51 EST
Dear Listers,
I have been searching to no avail for the birth of John Skerritt or Skellet
at around 1750. In researching the Skerritt name I have found Skellett and
Skerritt used interchangably within the same families that I know to be
correct. I frankly don't know whether John was born in Leicestershire,
Lincolnshire, Rutland or somewhere else, but at the time of his marriage in
Sproxton, Leicestershire, he was from Wymondham parish. After the birth of
his and Alice's first child, Mary, they moved to Grantham, Lincolnshire where
they remained for the rest of their lives, dying in Barrowby parish. There
was a large representation of Skerritts in Grantham going back to late 1600's
and all the way through the mid 1800's. It has been my assumption that he is
part of that group, yet I can't find his christening there. I find a John
Skellett born to Samuel and Mary in Castle Bytham, Lincolnshire in 1753 but
there are a some things that don't add up with that one so I don't want to
just accept it as correct.
I know there are also a good number of Skerrits in Leicestershire and Rutland
and am wondering if somehow his branch is one of these, maybe ultimately
related to the ones in Grantham but not of their direct line.
Does anyone have access to records that would reveal a birth in
Leicestershire around 1750? I would appreciate any help you could give.
I'm working my way through each and every parish in Lincolnshire right now
but would appreciate any help that would save me those many months of
research.
Thank you for your help.
