SEGLER January 21, 1777 in Shenandoah Co, VA. She died December 10, 1830
in Marion Co, TN.

Notes for MORDECAI LEWIS:
The following notes were taken from a copy of an article that appeared in
the Sevier Co. News-Record on February 26, 1976; written by Mrs. Buelah D.
Linn, Sevier Co. Historian. The article was found in the research files at
McClung Library, Knoxville, TN. and a copy of the article are in my
personal files.
Mordecai Lewis served in the Revolutionary War as a Pvt. in Capt.
Jacob Holleman's Co. of the VA Dunsmore Co Militia.
Mordecai married Mary Segler about 1776. The census of Shenandoah
Co, VA in 1785 showed Mordecail Lewis with a household of seven persons
living in one dwelling.
After the Revolutionary War, Mordecai emigrated to Sevier Co., TN
carrying with him the old Welsh Bible. According to this newspaper
article, in 1976 this Bible was in the possession of a descendant of George
W. Lewis or Archibald Lewis of Marion Co, TN.
Page 101 of the Blount Journal 1790-1796 states that on October 9,
1794 Mordecai Lewis was appointed coroner for Sevier Co. Page 102 states
that on September 19, 1794 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace of
Sevier Co.
In Ramsey's History of TN, page 630, he mentions that one of the
magistrates not present at the first meeting of the court on November 8,
1794 was Modecai Lewis. On page 669, he again refers to Mordecai Lewis as
a Justice of the Peace in 1796.
Mordecai Lewis was present at the first court for Sevier Co. held
under the state constitution on July 4, 1796.
It is unknown exactly when Mordecai Lewis settled in the Pigeon
Forge area. A survey for 151 acres in Sevier Co. was made on January 12,
1807 and grant no. 905 was issued by Governor Willie Blount on May 12,
1810. The acreage appears to have been on the east side of the West Fork
of the Little Pigeon River. The Old Mill at Pigeon Forge is located on the
original land grant.
The Chancery Court record of 1842 reads in part: "On the 15th day
of December in the year 1818 a certain Isaac Love of the County of Sevier
purchased of the heirs of Mordecai Lewis one hundred and fifty acres
situated in the County of Sevier and being the same on which said Mordeica
had lived and died." The said Isaac Love was one of the heirs and there
were seven others: John Lewis, George W. Lewis, Levi Lewis, Archibale
Lewis, Robert Shields, Amos Lewis, and James C. Mitchell. For legal
purposes the names of the daughters' husbands was used.
This article further states that Mordecai Lewis was buried in Knox
Co, TN.
More notes taken from this article on the children of Mordecai
Lewis appears on their family record.

states that an Amos Lewis came with his family from Shenandoah Valley to
the French Broad River about 1786. They settled on the south side of the
river in the Taylor's Bend area 7-8 miles from Dandridge. Amos Lewis
became a class leader in the Pine Chapel neighborhood.

1791 in North Carolina.

Notes for G. LEVI LEWIS:
The following information taken from the Mrs. Beulah D. Linn, Sevier Co.
Historian article that appeared in the Sevier Co. News-Record on February
26, 1972.
After the death of Mordecai Lewis, Levi entered into a verbal
agreement with Isaac Love to remain on the land and cultivate a portion of
it. Levi cultivated between 40-50 acres of this land.
In 1824 Levi Lewis received a land grant for 150 acres that
adjoined the Lewis property. He sold this property to Amos Gobble.
The Sevier Co. Survey Book 1 shows that on March 21, 1836 Levi
Lewis made entry No. 1128 for 100 acres on Flat Creed that adjoined his own
land and that of William, George and Adam Frost.
Deed Book H, page 406 shows that Levi Lewis sold two tracts
totaling 142 acres to Milas Hooper of Blount Co on December 4, 1849.
The 1830 census shows three males and three females as children of
Levi Lewis. In 1850, census records show Levi Lewis at age 64; wife
Elizabeth age 59 and born in NC; daughter Serena age 20 and son age 25.

Notes for ARCHIBALD LEWIS:
Notes taken from the article written by Mrs. Beulah D. Linn, Sevier Co.
Historian and appearing in the February 26, 1976 issue of the Sevier Co.
News-Record.
The 1830 cnesus shows Archibald Lewis and his wife were living in

Children of ARCHIBALD LEWIS and NANCY MITCHELL are:
i. FIELDING4 LEWIS, b. January 03, 1809.
ii. WILLIAM A. LEWIS, b. April 22, 1810.

Notes for (MARY) POLLY LEWIS:
From the article written by Mrs. Beulah D. Linn, Historian of Sevier Co,
TN and appearing in the Sevier Co. News-Record on February 26, 1976.
In this article, Mrs Linn shows the following children for Mary
Lewis and husband Isaac Love and I do not know if some of these are
actually the children of Mary and Isaac Love or not. According to the
surnames, some could be daughters and their married names are listed;
others with the surname of Lewis do not seem likely the children of Mary
and Isaac Love.
Mrs. Linn's article states that the children were: Willaim King,
James Thomas, Alexander Preston, Andrew Martin, Mary Lewis, Mordecai Lewis,
Reuben Blount, Sally Kincannon, Isaac Moore, Elizabeth Thompson, Catherine
McDonald, Margaret Mitchell and John Wesley Love.
She further states that the family moved to McDonald Co, MO
sometime between 1840-1850.
(Note from researcher Jackie Rhodes: This information on the above listed
children will have to be checked and verified. These children with
different surnames could possibly be grandchildren who lived in the
household at the time this census was taken._

Sevier Co, TN. He was born September 06, 1783 in VA, and died March 17,

Notes for POLLY LEWIS:
In the article written by Mrs. Beulah D. Linn, Historian of Sevier Co, TN
and published in the Sevier Co. News-Record on February 26, 1976, the
following children are listed as children of Polly Lewis and Isaac
Love. However, there are different surnames for the children and it is
unclear if these are actually children of Polly and Isaac Love.
Children of Polly Lewis and Isaac Love: William King, James
Thomas, Alexander Preston, Andrew Martin, Mary Lewis, Mordecai Lewis,
Reuben Blount, Sally Kincannon, Isaac Moore, Elizabeth Thompson, Catharine
McDonald, Margaret Mitchell and John Wesley Love.
According to this article, Isaac Love was a Postmaster at the
Sevier Courthouse and left his job there after the death of Mordecai and
purchased his father-in-law's property where he began to build the Pigeon
