Hi, Ellen,
Thanks for sending in the info.
I am taking for granted that you are aware of the descent of your Baylis
EARLE from (Sir) John EARLE > Samuel, I > Samuel, II, (Major) Samuel EARLE,
III. If not then let us know and we will get back with you about that
information in a separate email fully although the following will cover some
of it.
By any chance do you have any information on your WILSON and COUCH families
as well.?
I have a CROUCH family out of North Carolina in the Richmond County, North
Carolina area, I believe. The earliest info that I have is Samuel CROUCH,
born: abt. 1785 in North Carolina, (no info on parents,) who married wife #
1: Sarah ? and wife # 2: Abigail ? and Sarah ? and Samuel CROUCH were my
maternal 3rd great grandparents. They had 12 or 13 children and their
daughter, Susan CROUCH, born: abt. 1815 in North Carolina, married John M.
SLAUGHTER, born: abt. 1795 in Blackjack Township, Richmond County, North
Carolina, (son of Mary McDONALD/McDANIEL, (parents: ??,) and (Reverend) Owen
SLAUGHTER, Jr., (son of Mary Elizabeth BOLTON, (born: abt. 1741 in Nansemond
County, Virginia, and husband, Owen SLAUGHTER, Sr..)
John M. SLAUGHTER and Susan CROUCH moved to Greene/Pickens County, Alabama,
and their son, Hudson H. SLAUGHTER, was born March 13, 1844 and Susan CROUCH
SLAUGHTER died 10 days later on March 23, 1844 in Greene/Pickens County,
Alabama. Hudson H. SLAUGHTER married Claranda "Clara" WILLIAMS, born: abt.
1840 in either Catahoula or Franklin Parish, Louisiana.
Also, there is WILSON family connection with an Elizabeth WILSON who married
David McCRACKEN, (RS,) whose daughter, Elizabeth McCRACKEN, married George
PIERCE, son of Hugh PIERCE, (RS,) born: abt. 1749/51 in Frederick County,
Virginia, (possibly is the twin brother of a Daniel PIERCE, (said to be the
son of immigrants, Elizabeth and Richard PIERCE.)
Hugh PIERCE, (RS,) was born in abt. 1749/51 in Frederick County, Virginia
where your ancestral great grandfather and my paternal 5th great grandfather,
(Major) Samuel EARLE, III, (born: abt. 1692 in Westmoreland County,
Virginia,) became the 1st Member of the House of Burgesses from Frederick
County, Virginia.
My descent from Hugh PIERCE, (RS,) and wife, Sofia HUNTER, is believed to be
through a daughter named Elizabeth "Betty?/Bettie?/Betsy?" PIERCE, born:
1790 in 96th District, South Carolina, who married William MYRICK, born:
abt. 1790 in SC?, (possibly the son of (Colonel) James MYRICK, (RS,) of
Barnwell County, South Carolina, born: abt. 1745/poss. bet. 1740-1760 in
?/Brunswick Co., VA?/Moore/Warren/Bute/Granville Co., NC area?, (possibly son
of a John or William MYRICK, born: abt. 1735,) and the wife of (Col.) James
MYRICK who was Mary BROOKER, (daughter of (Reverend) John BROOKER, it is
believed.) (But this is not proven totally.)
Mary BROOKER and (Col.) James MYRICK also had sons named Henry, Eli, James
and John, I believe, as well as a daughter named Elizabeth MYRICK who married
a GILL and maybe another daughter, (need to check that info again,) and the
names of Jeremiah, Aquilla, Willis and others in the family are found in the
Hugh PIERCE family/descendants information.
Elizabeth PIERCE and William MYRICK, as far as I know had 4 sons named:
(1.) Aquilla?/James MYRICK, born: abt. 1814? in Georgia? (md:
?/Quilla?/Sarah Elizabeth? BENNETT?,) and had children including those named
Sarah Elizabeth, William Willis, Samuel, Daniel and others,) and the
aforementioned Sarah Elizabeth MYRICK, born: abt. 1837, married a man named
Mastin/Maston GRANTHAM, (who also married Elberry Ann EVANS, (whose sister,
Rhoda EVANS married William Willis "Willis" MYRICK, brother of Sarah
Elizabeth MYRICK who married Mastin GRANTHAM,) (and Mastin/Maston GRANTHAM
was the son of Lydia Jane BARLOW and Richard "Lucky" GRANTHAM, III, (son of
Elizabeth AMMONS and Richard GRANTHAM, Jr., (more info shown at son # 4
info,) and the aforementioned William Willis "Willis" MYRICK married Rhoda
EVANS, sister of the aforementioned Elberry Ann EVANS who married the
aforementioned Mastin/Maston GRANTHAM who married Willis's sister, Sarah
Elizabeth MYRICK. (There is a MASTIN family that I believe may, in some way
connect to this GRANTHAM, HERRINGTON, MYRICK, EVANS lineage as well as I
believe that this EVANS lineage probably connects to my maternal EVANS
lineage of my maternal 2nd great grandfather, William Tunley JONES, (CS,) who
was the son of Alson Bluford "Gip" JONES and wife, Malinda/Melinda EVANS,
daughter of Panther "Panther" EVANS.
(2.) William Henry "Henry" MYRICK, born: abt. 1820 in Alabama, who married
wife # 1: Rebecca ? and wife # 2: Mary "Polly" BYRD, (some of his
descendants have information that says that he immigrated from Ireland but
this appears to be in error but still checking out to see.)
(3.) Jeremiah Pinckney "Pink/Jerry?" MYRICK, born: abt. 1820 in Alabama,
(married Mildred "Millie/Milly" STINSON, (daughter of Elizabeth STINSON.)
Among his descendants are also seen the names of Samuel and Eli as well as
they married into the HERRINGTON and PARKER families. I believe that their
PARKER lineage is connected somehow to my paternal 2nd great grandfather,
Jeremiah "Jerry" PARKER, born: 1795 in Maryland, (and the BOONE family was
in Maryland at one point and may, possibly, connect with as his son, Spencer
B. PARKER, is descended from Jerry's wife, Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS, daughter
of Bailey JENNINGS and wife, Kitty EARLE, daughter of the aforementioned 2nd
son named Samuel EARLE, IV, (RS/Sgt.,) and his wife, Tabitha WILLIAMS. Kitty
EARLE and Bailey JENNINGS married in December 1811 in Christian County,
Kentucky and she is thought to be the sister of Elizabeth EARLE who married
about the same time to Moses McWATERS.
(4.) William H. "Billy" MYRICK, born: 1827 in Jones County, (later Jasper
Co.,) Mississippi, married Phoebe Catherine HERRINGTON, born: April 1834 in
MS, (daughter of William HERRINGTON, Jr., born: abt. 1794 in New Hanover
Co., North Carolina, (son of William HERRINGTON, Sr., born: bef. 1755 in
Craven Co., NC,) and wife, Cynthia "Sina" GRANTHAM, born: abt. 1800 in
Robeson Co., NC on border of South Carolina, (whom I believe is the sister of
the Richard "Lucky" GRANTHAM, III, (mentioned,) above and that she is the
daughter of Elizabeth AMMONS, (daughter of Elizabeth PARKER and John (2)
AMMONS, born: abt. 1765 in Robeson Co., NC,) and husband, Richard GRANTHAM,
Jr., (son of Richard GRANTHAM, Sr., (son of James GRANTHAM, (son of Edward
GRANTHAM, II, (son of Edward GRANTHAM, I and Catherine PROCTOR, (daughter of
Joshua PROCTOR, (probably descended from immigrant, John PROCTOR, but don't
know that this has been proven yet.)
I believe that you descend from his marriage to Anna SORRELL, (parents of the
1st son to be named Samuel EARLE, IV, born: abt. 1727, died: abt. 1752, md:
Miss ? PERKINS,) if I am remembering correctly, and I descend from his 2nd
marriage to Elizabeth HOLBROOK, aka HOLDBROOK(E,) born: abt. 1733.
My descent is from (Major) Samuel EARLE, III's 2nd son to be named Samuel
EARLE, IV, (RS/Sgt.,) born: January 20, 1760 at "Town Run" Plantation,
Faquier County, Virginia.
For some time now I have been thinking that there may be connections between
my MYRICK - PIERCE - HERRINGTON, aka HARRINGTON - GRANTHAM - GRAVES - DICKENS
- STUCKEY - HOWELL - CARY - TAYLOR family lineage in addition to the WARNER -
LEWIS - HOWELL - FIELDING - LANE - MERIWETHER - CRAWFORD lineage that also is
related to the CRAWFORD - MORGAN - BOONE lineage that, apparently, settled
Christian County, Kentucky along McWATERS and EARLE families.
It appears that the family of James HOWELL and Mary LANE, (aka Mrs. James
HOWELL and Mrs. Henry FIELDING, whose daughter, Frances FIELDING married
(Col.) John LEWIS of WARNER - LEWIS) whose son, John HOWELL, and daughter,
Mary HOWELL, both married into the WARNER - LEWIS siblings of the
aforementioned John and it appears at this time that I descend from 2 of
those siblings, (Col.) Charles Lilburne "Of the Byrd" LEWIS, Sr. who married
Mary HOWELL, and his brother, (Col.) Robert "Of Belvoir" LEWIS, who married
Jane MERIWETHER, (daughter of Elizabeth CRAWFORD, (related to the CRAWFORD
lineage of Daniel BOONE,) and husband, Nicholas MERIWETHER.)
It appears that the 2nd wife of (Sir) John EARLE, our immigrant from England
into Northumberland County, (who settled Yeocomico Parish with Thomas
HALE(S)/HAILES/HAYLES/HAILLES, (who along with wife, Thomasina DOWCETT,
appear to be the parents of Bridget(t) HALE(S) who married as the 1st wife of
Samuel EARLE, I, who later is thought to have married as the 1st husband to
his 2nd wife, Mat(t)ilda ALLERTON, (whom I believe is somehow closely related
to Isaac ALLERTON, Jr., (son of Isaac ALLERTON, Sr. and wife, Feare BREWSTER
of England to New England,) who made his way into Westmoreland County,
Virginia, and was married to Elizabeth WILLOUGHBY, (whom I believe is somehow
closely related to the Mary WILLOUGHBY that is believed to have been the wife
of my paternal 7th great grandfather, William JENNINGS, Sr., born: abt. 1670
in Sittenbourne Parish, Rappahannock Co., VA, (son of immigrant, John
JENNINGS, and Mary PAYNE, believed to have been the daughter of JENNINGS'
neighbor, John PAYNE, immigrant from England to Rappahannock Co., VA, whose
wife, Margaret/Margrett ? is thought to have been Margaret ROBINSON, daughter
of early 1600's Tidewater area of VA immigrant from England, Richard
ROBINSON, uncle or great uncle of Christopher ROBINSON.
The aforementioned Mary WILLOUGHBY is thought most likely to have been a
descendant of (Sir) Ambrose WILLOUGHBY from whom I believe Elizabeth
WILLOUGHBY also descends, if I have my information straight.
I also have wondered if Mary WILLOUGHBY also has descent from Augustine
WARNER, I and wife, Mary TOWNELEY, as she named one of her sons, Augustine
JENNINGS.
Okay, briefly, back to the aforementioned (Sir) John EARLE who, after the
death of wife # 1, my paternal 8th great grandmother, Mary SYMONS, in 1659,
married in 1660, before his death in September 1660, to his # 2 wife,
Elizabeth ?/CAUSEY, (either maiden name was CAUSEY or her 1st husband was
CAUSEY,) who married her 2nd husband, ? HOWELL, and then married her 3rd
husband, (Sir) John EARLE, and then married her 4th husband, William
CLEMENT(S.)
Some recent information that I have seen appears to show a connection between
this HOWELL family that Elizabeth married into and that of the James HOWELL
and Mary LANE family group of HOWELLs that married into the LEWIS - WARNER
lineage. And it is my EARLE descendant, great grandson of Samuel EARLE, IV,
(RS/Sgt,) who was Spencer B. PARKER, born: 1859/1855 in one census, probably
in Smith or Rankin County, MS, who married my great grandmother as her
2nd/3rd husband, and her name was Rachael Moranda "Randa/Randy" LEWIS, born:
abt. 1851 in Jones Co., MS, (daughter of Harriett ELLZEY and John LEWIS, (son
of Nancy COPELAND and Howell LEWIS, born: bet. 1782-1788 in Granville County,
North Carolina, whom is thought to be the twice descended from Elizabeth
WARNER and John "Councillor" LEWIS.)
Okay, back to the aforementioned Hugh PIERCE, (RS,) born: abt. 1749/1751 in
Frederick County, Virginia, whose wife was Sofia HUNTER, (believed to have
been the daughter of Cherokee parents, mother: BEAVER
TOATER/TOTER/Toyaleese/Towayehleesa,) (found in 1830's in Georgia Cherokee
census and "CHEROKEE PLANTERS OF GEORGIA," book,) and father: BOLD HUNTER,
born: abt. 1750 in North Carolina, who may or may not be the same BOLD HUNTER
who was born 1/2 Cherokee/1/2 Scottish son of Cherokee mother and Scottish
father and his birth name is said to have been John BOWLES, aka
DUWALI/DIWALI/D'IWALI/THE BOWL/Chief John BOWLES/BOWLS, (Chief of the Texas
Cherokee and the Arkansas Cherokee,) born: abt. 1750 in North Carolina, after
having been with a group of his Cherokee tribe out of North Carolina into
Georgia and other points in the South until they were in Missouri and then
left there by 1811 when the big earthquake hit which is also the same time
that we know that our HERRINGTON family, (descended from William HERRINGTON,
Sr., born: bef. 1755 in Craven County, North Carolina,) was traveling from
South Carolina, having left North Carolina earlier, making their way West but
chose to settle in Mississippi instead.
In 1811 after the big earthquake, (Chief) John BOWLES/D'IWALI, aka BOLD
HUNTER led his people into Arkansas and then by 1819 they went into East
Texas. He died in the last battle of the Texas Cherokee on July 16, 1839 in
Van Zandt County, Texas near Canton.
I have, for awhile now, been suspecting other MYRICK - PIERCE connections
with the EARLE lineage and now that I see that there is WILSON lineage that
married into the PRINCE - EARLE lineage and also went into Kentucky and
Missouri I am even more curious as to the possibilities that this Hugh
PIERCE, (RS,) of Frederick County, Virginia, and (Major) Samuel EARLE, III,
1st Member of the House of Burgesses from Frederick County, Virginia sometime
around that same time period, and their sons, George PIERCE and Baylis
EARLE's connections to the WILSON families just might have the missing link I
am looking for either prior to and/or after the time in Virginia and Kentucky
and then Missouri.
Does anything here connect in any new ways for you? Or for anyone else on
the list?
I am going to forward this on over to the PIERCE, WILSON, MYRICK, McCRACKEN,
CROUCH, COUCH, BOONE, BOWLES, PRINCE, HERRINGTON, HARRINGTON, HOWELL, LEWIS,
LANE lists as well just in case there might be someone there that might have
a clue.
Thanks, again, for writing in.
Sincerely,
Bellinda Myrick - Barnett
