We believe we found James on a later census in Milam County, Texas. It appeared he had remarried.

James was the brother of my ggrandfather, Jefferson Franklin (Frank) Lewis. They were the sons of Thomas Lewis & Emeline Dumas. Born in SC to Thomas & Emeline were Frank, Margaret A., Nancy A., William, & James. Born in NC after 1850 were John & Stephen.

Thomas & Emeline and all sons, except John, left NC about 1869 to go to California. They were censused in Jackson County, MO in 1870. Changed their mind and decided to come to Texas and were in Washington County in 1880. Do not know if the girls made the move or remained in NC. William has not bee found on the 1880 census anywhere. He married a Laura in NC and had two sons, John & Josiah. Emeline died inWashington County in 1888. It is possible Thomas returned to NC and remarried in Montgomery County,NC.

Looking for descendants of James.
