Much of this information is conjecture based on census records,
proximity, and naming patterns. None of it is proved.

Earl Lewis, Earl Eason Lewis or Earle Eason Lewis b. abt. 1770 in
Virginia is purported to have married Elizabeth (Betsey) McAllister the
29th of January, 1801 in Wayne County, Tennessee. Elizabeth was born
abt. 1784 perhaps in Tennessee. Earl is presumed to have died between
1840-1850 in Crawford County, Arkansas and Elizabeth died after 1840. It
appears she may have died after 1860 if she is the Elizabeth Lewis
living with J. F. Lewis in his 1860 Llano County, Texas census record.

Earl was born between 1760-1770 according to his 1820 and 1830 Wayne
County, Tennessee census records. According to David E. Lewis’ 1880
Merced County, California census record his father was born in Virginia.
(No other presumed children have been located in 1880.)

I believe there is enough circumstantial evidence to presume that
Harriet (Lewis) Haynes b. abt. 1800 in Kentucky, Claibourn/Claborn Lewis
b. Sept. 1, 1803 in Livingston County, Tennessee, and David E. Lewis b.
Oct. 2, 1821 in Wayne County, Tennessee were children of Earl Lewis.
There is sketchy data to suggest that Mary (Lewis) Haynes b. abt. 1810
in Kentucky, James Lewis (perhaps James M. Lewis) b. abt 1807 in
Kentucky, and Joseph F. Lewis b. abt. 1825 in Tennessee were also his
children. There are more children enumerated but unidentified in Earl’s
census records.

Claibourn Lewis lived near Earl Lewis in the 1830 Wayne County,
Tennessee census and David E. fits into Earl's household. Harriet (nee
Lewis) Haynes is found living 2 residences away from Earl in 1830 and
she named a son Claibern Haynes. I have been unable to locate Claibourn
Lewis in the 1840 census but Earl is found living in Van Buren, Crawford
County, Arkansas with a son who is the right age to be David E. Lewis.
In 1850 it appears that Earl Lewis is deceased. He would have been about
80 years old. In 1850 David E. Lewis is found living in Claibourn's
household in Hickman/Tomlinson, Scott County, Arkansas with Harriet
(Lewis) Haynes living next door. James Lewis and Mary (Lewis?) Haynes
are found living together with Joseph F. Lewis living next door in 1850
in Richland Township, Crawford County, Arkansas. In 1860 a J. F. Lewis
and his wife Melissa are found in Llano County, Texas with Elizabeth
Lewis age 78 born in Kentucky living in this household. It is possible
this is Joseph F. Lewis and his mother, Elizabeth (McAllister) Lewis
however I cannot find them in 1870 to get any other evidence.

It appears that Earl and his extended family moved to Northwestern
Arkansas by 1834 when Claibourn Lewis had a son, Thomas. Earl is on the
Washington County, Arkansas tax list in 1837. Claibourn is on the 1836
and 1837 tax list in Washington County, Arkansas. Jonathan Haynes,
husband of Harriet nee’ Lewis is on the Washington County, Arkansas tax
list in 1837 and 1839 and their son Claiborne P. Haynes was born in
Washington County Arkansas in 1835.

next residence is Harriet's brother, Claibourn Lewis; half of this
family is listed in Hickman, Scott County on one page and the rest of
the family is listed in Tomlinson, Scott County, Arkansas on the next
page. David E. Lewis, brother to Harriet and Claibourn is living with
Claibourn.

(It is presumed that David E. Lewis is a brother of Claibourn. Elizabeth
Walker is presumed to be a child of Claibourn Lewis but she could also
be his younger sister. She would fit into Earl Lewis’ 1830 and 1840
census records. However she lists her parents’ places of birth as
Tennessee and Tennessee where as David E. Lewis lists his parents
birthplaces as Virginia and Tennessee. Claibourn Lewis was born in
Kentucky so this does not fit with her 1880 census record either.
Elizabeth and her husband, E. T. Walker lived with Claibourn Lewis in
1850 and next door to Claibourn in 1870.)

This may be Joseph F. Lewis. If it is, his mother, Elizabeth
(McAllister) Lewis is probably the older woman living in this household.

The 1880 Census for David E. Lewis lists his father's birthplace as
Virginia.

Other unanswered questions regarding possible children of Earl:

1. Is Peyton Lewis who married his cousin Mary Ellen Lewis and who died
abt 1847 in a son of Earl Lewis?
2. Is the James M. Lewis who married Catherine (presumably Catherine
McCurdy) and had four known children: Buena Vista, David Walker, James
Boone, and Malissa Lewis Earl’s son, James Lewis born abt. 1807? There
are several records of James Lewis, J. Lewis, and James M. Lewis in the
1830s Crawford County tax lists but I am unable to determine if they are
all the same James Lewis or several.
