Chapter 5

Scruggs Lipford, son of John Lipford, Sr.

Scruggs Lipford was the son of John Lipford, Senior. He was born about
1755 in Virginia.

In 1779 Scruggs Lipford began serving in the Revolutionary War as part
of the Virginia Militia.

(Source: Lipford Family History by Ralph M. Lipford)

He was listed in "The Historical Register Of Virginians in the
Revolution: Soldiers, Sailors, Marines

1775-1783" by John H. Gwathmey: Liffard, Scruggs, E (E - Index of the
Revolutionary records in the Virginia State Archives)

Soldier Scruggs Lipford received pay for Militia service during the
Revolutionary War. He was listed in

the Aud. Acct. Book 22, page 19, 27 May, 1784, Richmond, Virginia: "Harr. Co
/ Scruggs Lipford /2 /14 /8

(2 pounds, 14 shillings, 8 pence)". (Source: Revolutionary War Records,
Mecklenburg County, Virginia by

Katherine B. Elliott)

In the 1787 Census of Virginia, Scruggs Lipford and John Lipford were
both listed on Tax List "A" for

Buckingham County, Virginia.

Scruggs Lipford married his first cousin Nancy Lipford, daughter of
Amos Lipford and Frances Traylor.

The Last Will and Testament of Amos Lipford, dated 1813, named Scruggs:
"Item: I give to my son in law

Scruggs Lipford five shillings and no more."

Sometime during the 1790s Nancy and Scruggs Lipford left Virginia and
moved to Abbeville District,

South Carolina, in the northwestern part of the state. (Source: Ralph M.
Lipford)

Scruggs and Nancy were listed in the 1800 census in Abbeville, South
Carolina with a boy and a girl,

both under 10 years of age.

In the 1810 census the family was living in Union County, South
Carolina, with 1 male (10 thru 15

years old), 1 male (45 years and over), 2 females (26 thru 44) born
1765-1784, and 2 females (45 years

and over) born before 1765.

They were not found in the 1820 census of South Carolina. The only
Lipfords listed in South Carolina were a Henry Lipford in Union County and
Obedience Lipford in Abbeville.

Scruggs Lipford died September 1825 in Abbeville District at the age of
70, leaving his wife Nancy, one

son, Edward, and two daughters, Agnes W. and Rose Ann Lipford. His estate
was valued at $1000.00

A true inventory of the personal estate of Scruggs Lipford dec'd. was taken
on 28th October 1825, and

an accounting of the estate was given in court in the month of May 1826.

Unfortunately, the town of Abbeville had three fires from January 1872
to January 1873 and the court

house records were burned. Vital records are no longer available and
information has had to be pieced

together from other sources.

Children of Scruggs and Nancy Lipford:

1. Rose Ann Lipford, daughter of Scruggs E. Lipford and Nancy Lipford, was
born 1790-1800, most likely

in South Carolina. In the 1800 census in Abbeville, South Carolina, she
was probably the girl under 10

years of age. Rose Ann Lipford, age 30-40, was listed in the 1830 census
for Abbeville District, South

Carolina, living with another female age 20-30.

Could this be Rose Ann Lipford?

1850 census: Savannah River Regiment, Abbeville, South Carolina

Rosa A. Leopard, Age: 56, Estimated birth year: abt 1794, Birth Place: South
Carolina, Color: White, Gender: Female, Family Number: 1107

2. Agnes, born 26 March 1803 in South Carolina, may have been a Lipford, and
may have been a daughter of Scruggs and Nancy Lipford. Agnes was listed as
a Lipford in the Latter Day Saints Family History Center, though she is not
found in early census records of Scruggs Lipford in Abbeville. She may have
been the female living with Rose Ann Lipford in the 1830 census, a female
age 20-30. Agnes married Larkin Reynolds on 12 March 1850 in Abbeville,
South Carolina, his third wife. Larkin Reynolds was born 23 March 1807 in
Greenwood, South Carolina, the son of Benjamin Reynolds and Barbara Arnold.
In the 1860 census Larkin was listed as a farmer and slave owner with 11
slave houses, 80 slaves, 40 male slaves, 40 female slaves. He was 53 years
old, with the value of his personal estate listed as $70,800. Larkin
Reynolds died 06 May 1873 in Greenwood, South Carolina. Agnes died 19
January 1883 in Greenwood. They had no children. Was Agnes a Lipford and a
daughter of Scruggs? No proof has been found that she was a Lipford.

3. Edward Lipford, son of Scruggs and Nancy Lipford, was born about 1800.
In the 1800 census in Abbeville, South Carolina he was the boy under 10
years of age. In the 1810 census the family was living in Union County,
South Carolina with 1 male (10 thru 15 years old), which must have been
Edward.

Edward married Eleanor P. Pettus, daughter of Captain James Pettus and
Louisa Anna Shotwell, about

1815 in Abbeville District, South Carolina.

B. Adeline Lipford, born about 1820 in Abbeville District, South Carolina,
may have been a daughter of Edward Lipford and Eleanor P. Pettus. She may
have married a Mr. Cobb. In the 1850 census of Abbeville, South Carolina,
Saluda, we find Andrew Cobb, age 24, Adeline Cobb, age 30, Nancy, age 1, and
William Lippford, age 6. In the 1860 census of Abbeville, South Carolina,
we find Anderson Cobb, age 30, Adeline Cobb, age 43, Ellen Cobb, age 10,
America Cobb, age 8, Martha Cobb, age 5, and William Lipford, age 17. There
is no proof that Adeline was a Lipford or that she married a Cobb.

She is not listed in the Graves Family Association:
http://www.gravesfa.org/gen270.htm, although her sisters Mary Susan and
Frances are listed. In fact, they are the only two children of Eleanor
Pettus listed.

D. Ann Lipford, daughter of Edward Lipford and Eleanor P. Pettus, was born
1823 in Abbeville District, South Carolina. Ann Lipford was named in the
Abbeville Banner in 1847 when her father's real estate was sold. She was
not married at that time. It has been reported that Ann married Middleton
Cobb, son of Charles C. Cobb. In the 1850 census Middleton Cobb was listed
was wife Oma and several children all born before 1846, so it seems unlikely
that Ann married him.
