Anthony Lipford, son of Fielding Lipford and Susan Alexander, grandson
of Anthony Par Lipford and Elizabeth Robinson, and great grandson of Amos
Lipford and Frances Traylor, was born 20 June 1814 in Pittsylvania County,
Virginia. He died 03 September 1890 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
Anthony married Anna C. "Annie" Adkins on 23 December 1833 in Wilkes County,
North Carolina.

Anna C. "Annie" Adkins, daughter of William Adkins and Sarah Alexander,
was born 01 Oct 1815 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and died 22 Feb 1905
in Wilkes County, North Carolina.

Daniel Lipford and Others against Elizabeth Lipford In Chancery

The Court ordered Coalman Bennett, appointed as a Commissioner, to sell the
land on which Anthony P. Lipford lived and died, after advertising the time
and place for one month. He was also to divide the slaves into 3 equal
parts: one third to Amos Lipford, one third to Daniel Lipford, and divide
the last third equally between John Y. Yates (in right of Elizabeth his
wife) and Anthony Lipford.



Court Orders, February 18, 1841, Motion of Coalman D. Bennett with Richard
Jones and Thomas L. Jones, who entered into a Bond, in penalty of $20.00,
and the required certificate is granted him for obtaining letters of
administration on the estate of Anthony P. Lipford deceased from Elizabeth
Lipford widow. The inventory included 24 slaves and the total estate valued
at $10,084.45.

It was a real revelation to me one day when I realized that Anthony
Lipford of Wilkes County, North Carolina, had named his first 3 children

Susan (after his grandmother Susan Alexander),

Fielding (after his grandfather Fielding Lipford), and

William Alexander (after his great grandfather William Alexander).

Also, the will of Anthony P. Lipford left 2 slaves to his grandson, Anthony
Lipford. In personal interviews

of local residents in Wilkes County, it was related that Anthony had gone to

3, and Joseph William, 2. It was here in Johnson County, TN that Felix owned
and farmed his land of about 400 acres. Living and prospering in the Butler
community, Felix and his brother W. A. Lipford sold timber to the Watauga
Academy in the years the academy was being constructed. Felix and his two
brothers, William Alexander (Alec) Lipford and Lewis Lipford, stayed in
Johnson County, TN when their parents returned to Wilkes County, NC after

Leitha Whaley Lipford died on September 24, 1878. Felix Lipford
married Leitha's older sister, Sarah Whaley, who helped him rear the
children remaining at home. Felix Lipford died on December 11, 1896 and was
buried in Whaley #1 Cemetery in Carter County, Tennessee. Sarah Whaley
Lipford died in 1914. All of Felix's children, except Joseph William
Lipford, who moved to Graysville, Tennessee, remained in the Johnson/Carter

Felix Lipford (1836-1896) was buried in the Whaley #1 Cemetery in
Carter County, Tennessee. His remains were moved to the Holloway Cemetery
in 1947 when the TVA constructed Watauga Lake.

Lewis D. Lipford, the third child of Anthony and Anna Adkins Lipford,
was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina, in 1841. Lewis settled in the
Shouns Crossroads area of Johnson County near Mountain City, Tennessee,
before 1863. This is still home to several of Lewis' descendants. Lewis
Lipford married (1) Malinda Powell, born about 1843, on 20 Dec 1864. In the
recording of this marriage, Lewis is listed as Lewis R. Lipford and date of
birth about 1843. Lewis' second wife was (2) America Whitaker, rumored to be
Native American. Lewis Lipford had at least thirteen (13) children by these
two wives. Felix and his brother W. A. Lipford sold timber to the Watauga
Academy in the years the academy was being constructed. Felix and his two

Lewis D. Lipford was listed in Company G, 13th TN Cavalry, US Army
(Union) 1863-1865. Company G consisted of 108 men raised in Carter and
Johnson County, Tennessee. He was the only Lipford listed. Confederate
patriots from Tennessee usually went to North Carolina to enlist. The 13th
Regiment Cavalry was organized at Strawberry Plains, Nashville and Gallatin,
Tennessee in October 1863. They were active in Kentucky, North Carolina,
Virginia and Tennessee. The men were mustered out on September 1, 1865.

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was an organization founded in
1866 for Union veterans of the American Civil War, according to an article
titled "Descriptive Records, Department of Tennessee, Grand Army of the
Republic", transcribed by Raymond A. Sears, in Tennessee Ancestors, Vol. 22,
No.1, April 2006. The Calvin M. McClung Collection of the Knox County Public
Library has the two volumes of original rosters of the Tennessee chapters.
