Hi List-

I am just starting this search for info on John Smith, a Hungarian
immigrant, politician.
His name was LIPTE/ LIPTAY, LIPTAI, LIPTHAY (sp?). before he came to America.
I was told there is a picture of him and President Roosevelt when the
president was declaring war.
He died in Maryland in the 1960s, maybe in Bethesda, MD.
He married Elizabeth Tolson (sp?) had 3 sons, 2 still living, but not
interviewed yet.
Elizabeth Smith died in the 1980s. She reportedly had a residence in
Maryland but was travelling when she died.
While looking for Liptays I found an immigration record in Baltimore, MD
of Georgy, Maria, and Janos Liptay, with the Liptay scratched out and Yaniko
written in, in 1905.
I felt that was significant somehow. Since Janiko is probably how it should
have been spelled, and why was the Liptay crossed out? Was this the Liptay
who became John Smith??
At first I thought he was a politician in Maryland but was told it
was Ohio. Supposedly a State Senator, but I haven't been able to find any
record.
Because he was in politics I thought he might have beeb in politics
in Hungary;
In the 1925-26 Nemesi Evkonyv (Nobility Year Book) Hungary
only two noble names come
close to the name ;
One is "Lipcsey" and the other is Baron "Lipthay"
No Tolsen mentioned in the book. There are some similar
names of common peoples in the book. Those married in to the noble
families. The names are: Lipko, Lipovniczky, Lipovnov, Lipszky and
Liptay.

-
I noticed that there was a Hungarian Liptay villa that was changed to an
orphanage or school after WWII.
-
In 1835 there is an account of a man named Forgo;
Forgo was a very unruly patient ; he never observed homoeopathic dieting,
always accepted all invitations, smoked very strong tobacco, and, in
general, observed neither his own prescriptions nor those of Hahnemann.
A few days before his death he desired to visit some mineral springs
several days' journey from Pesth, but he did not reach the place, but died
on the way, in the house of his friend, Baron Liptay, July 17, 1835.
.. considerable legacies he left for the publication of the work of St,
Horvath "Concerning the Origin of the Hungarians."

In Napoleon's famous 1796 campaign in Italy

-
Trübswetter, the village was given, in 1790, to the Baron Antoine Liptay,
Austrian general, as
recompense for his victories against the Turks.
-
In 1721 There were already Liptes in the area;

-Perhaps Baron Liptay's descendants were part of the Hugarian Monarchy and
left Hungary when they could see that
Germany and its allies, including the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, was
losing the world war and the monarchy disintegrating.
Or maybe they left earlier.
The original emigration from Croatia-Slavonia began in 1873, upon the
completion of the new railway connections to the seaport of Fiume, when
some of the more adventurous Croatians came to the United States
1895: The first wave of Hungarian emigration to America.
The second wave is from 1900 - 1914. A registry office is situated in the
parish hall up until 1895 in Hungary.
During these years (1899-1910) the total immigration into the United States
of Slavs have formed about 22 percent (actually 2,117,240).

I got some answers from my first query that I thought I shouls add
to this lists archives;

Concerning a book..........from the real Lipthay family, you have to know,
that in the book by Nagy Iván and Kempelen Béla they are written detaily,
till the beginning of the 13th Century. Same, look at here a book about the
noble-families of county Liptó (
http://www.c-shop.hu/product.php?productid=17091&xid=5b341a6b3c1223a517fc8b0db53
3861b )
The name Lipthay is later, like the family, and origined from the name of
the county Lipto, but by the anciently orders of the harmony of vowels it
was changed to "a". The h inside is no more like a noble affectation, to
show the "differency" of the origine. It was very frequent. You can find
the former Lipto county here, even that is now have been Slovakia since 1993

From: "KL" <>

Hi, Brenda, The book Lajos showed you will be of no use to you since
there is no genealogical info about the Lipthay family in it. ...This name
in its various spellings is quite common in Hungary and there were other
Liptay/Liptai families (some of nobility) existing at the same
time.....Also, there were several Antals in the Lipthay family and the
baronial title passed from father to son and so on. Military careers
among the noble families were far from uncommon. At Ellis Island there
are many listed.... I do have a rudimentary genealogy of Lipthay family
from several published sources...Kathy.

The old 1910 Hungarian megye map is at :
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910 The " i " on the end of a
surname means >from and ' Y " means of. Seems that LIPTAY and LIPTAI
surname shows up in Slovak Republic's phone book. www.zoznamst.sk type a
0 (zero) in area code. Take a look in Ellis Island website:
www.ellisislandrecords.org Check out www.radixforum.com lot of
researching going on that board.

I think they were Catholic and I found this note about Hungarian Churches;
-
At present (1911) the Catholic Slovaks have a clergy consisting of one
bishop (Rt. Rev. J.M. Koudelka) and 104 priests, and have `34 churches
situated as follows: in Pennsylvania, 81 (Dioceses of Altoona, 10; Erie, 4;
Harrisburg, 3; Philadelphia, 15; Pittsburg, 35; and Scranton, 14); in Ohio,
14 (in the Diocese of Cleveland, 12; and Columbus, 2); in Illinois, 10 (in
the Arch-diocese of Chicago, 7; and Peoria, 3); in New Jersey 11 (in the
Diocese of Newark, 7; and Trenton, 4); in New York, 6; and in the States of
Connecticut, 3; Indiana, 2; Wisconsin, 2; and Minnesota, Michigan,
Missouri, Alabama, and West Virginia, one each.
