Hi Listers,
I have just had a reply from the Tasmanian Archives re William
Litchfield from Nottingham who was convicted 1840 and transportedd
to Australia.
Information is as follows:-
LITCHFIELD, WILLIAM
Convict no.1316, aged 28 years, arrived Tasmania aboard "Lady
Raffles" 20 Oct 1840. For stealing a sheet and blanket from Mr
Fisher of Nottingham, and wearing apparel, sentence 10 years.
Native of Nottingham, married to Betsy, 6 children , son Nathan,
daus Mary, Hannah, Eliza, Jemima and Anne all at Nottingham. Free
certificate issued 24 April 1850.
The only William Litchfield I have on my Derbys/Notts Litchfield
family tree who could fit this man is William Litchfield, son
of John Litchfield and Dorothy Birch , b.Dec 9, 1811 at
Nottingham. I did not have a wife or children for him on my file.
There is another William Litchfield born abt 1813 at Snelston,
Derbyshire, son of Stephen Litchfield and Ann Bowler. I have him
listed as an army deserter 1 August 1835, then aged 22, an engineer
of the 71 Highlanders. He could possibly have moved to Nottingham
to escape the law.
But I think the William b. 1811 is more likely to be this
convict. Would be interesting to know if he returned to his wife
and children in England or if they came out to join him in Australia.
