I have been to Natl Archives in a couple parts of the country. You
don't need an appointment, for their ususal genealogy materials.
They have US census stuff, military, immigrantion - lots and lots of
goodies. They have a web site, and you can access info about
specific Natl Archives sites across the country. Something like
"nara.gov"

It is best to know what you want before you go, it can be
overwhelming, so much is available.
