My aunt, the only surviving child of my paternal grandparents, used to
ask my Lithuanian grandfather about the old country and his emigration
in 1900 at age 14. He would tell her he didn't want to talk about it,
and never did. He was extremely patriotic about his new country, but
didn't want to discuss the old one. The result is that we have
virtually no family history from that branch. One wonders why the
subject was so painful. Leaving parents behind? Flight to avoid
conscription into the Russian army? I dunno.
