I'm not david, but........the search to find out where someone came from
begins here. Have you looked at US federal census records? They ask
(particularly in 1900, 1910 and 1920) where you were born and what language
do you speak, where was your father from and what language did he speak,
where was your mother from and what language did she speak. When trying to
narrow the information down to a town, American church records, particularly
marriage records, often include the paris of origin. Census info also tells
you if the specific individual is an alien, is petitioned or is naturalized.
If petitioned or naturalized, there are immigration records to be found with
more information about town of origin. Last, but not least, there is the
death certificate with information as good as the (usually a family
member's) knowledge retgarding place of birth. If you STILL can't find the
place of origin, start looking for information regarding the witnesses to
marriages and baptisms, which can be gleaned from church records. Without
fail, they are friends and relatives from the same town in the old country.
