Hello, Lutz,
Your Szemkus can be misspeling of Lithuanian surnames Zemkus (Zhemkus) or Ziemkus (Zhiemkus). Surname Zhemkus have come from Lithuanian words "zheme" or "zhemas". Word "zheme" means "Earth, land, soil". Word "zhemas" means "low". Surname Zhiemkus have come from Lithuanian word "zhiema", which means "the winter". Also there is Lithuanian surname Simkus (Shimkus). But it seems to me, that You are pronouncing Szemkus as Zhemkus?
I think surnames Senkus and Sinkus have different origin. It can be that surname Senkus have come from Lithuanian word "senka", which means "is sinking, is becoming lower".
I have looked to "Dictionary of Lithuanian surnames". Nobody knows, what syllable Sin means. But there are such Lithuanian surnames: Sindoras, Singaila, Singaras, Sintauta. All these surnames have beem made from syllble Sin and other word. Word "doras" means "honest", word "gaila" means "it's a pity", word "garas" means "the steam", word "tauta" means "the nation".
There is placename Sinta Maria in Romania.
