The usual estimate is that 80% of the Pre-Partitions nobility were
subsequently declassed by the policies of the occupying powers. It should
be noted that a significant percentage of the Polish-Lithuanian knightly
estate were quite poor. Many lived in small villages, like the Dobrzynskis
in Pan Tadeusz, where everyone was related and had the same last name. Some
worked as servants for the wealthy nobility, like Gerwazy Protazy in Pan
Tadeusz. Some were even completely without land. By the 18th century, it
was common for families to have forgotten their coat of arms. And by the
emigration era, all this sort of thing was often ancient forgotten history.
