In Europe, nationalism is rather popular. In Belgium, there are 3 official
languages : Dutch (=Flemish), French and German (60 % Flemish, 35 % French,
5% German). Driving from Antwerp to Germany I see the following signposts
(in km):
- Aken 180 km
- Aix-la-Chapelle 55 km
- Aachen 18 km
It all concerns the German city of Aachen (the city of Charles V).
When you are a tourist, coming from f.e. England, this is rather confusing
if you are not common with the european nationalism. "Cologne" as David
calls it is the French name for "Köln". Near Brussels we have a village
called "Jezus-Eik" (Oak of Jezus). Francophones call it
"Notre-Dame-au-Bois" (Our Lady in the Forest !?!).
I think today Vilnius is Vilnius (and during the interbellum, when 80 % of
the inhabitants was Polish, it was Wilno) and Warszawa is Warszawa (and not
Warsaw or Warschau). New York is New York and not Nieuw Amsterdam.
And after all I live in Antwerpen, and not in Anvers or Antwerp.
