I think you will find that you will need some kind of official documentation
attesting to your scholarly status in order to obtain much in the way of
cooperation or access. Get one or more letters on some kind of official
letterhead. Impressed seals would be desirable.
One should dress and behave like a mature adult university professor. One
American genealogical author, and real university professor, of my
acquaintance is a member of the 1960s generation, and still wears long hair
and a beard, and tends to dress like a motorcycle gang member. He has
gotten very bad receptions at several European libraries and archives, and
does not understand why his Ph.D and publications don't seem to secure a
better reception.
