I thought that I would share some information that someone had kindly passed
on to me a couple of years ago about LITTLE/GRAHAMS, and many others. It
was a genealogical manuscript called "Dodgson Manuscripts" written in 1843
by a Robert Dodgson.
It is on-line at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rutledge/DodgsonManuscript.htm
(If I am repeating information that the rest of you have shared before on
this list, please excuse me!)
Anyway, it was through this family history of the DODGSON/RUTLEDGES, that I
found the information on MY William Little, from Canonbie, Scotland, and the
correct name of his wife, who died in childbirth on the voyage over to
Canada. We were always told that her name was "Helen Foster", but I learned
through this genealogical report that her name was actually "Eleanor
Forrester". I learned alot about HER family tree, too, which involved
GRAHAMS, through this manuscript.
The FORRESTERS/GRAHAMS (at least from this tree) had all lived on "the
borders" of England and Scotland...Nicholforest, Cumberland and surrounding
area. My own William LITTLE (b. in Canonbie, Scotland) had the first three
of his children born in Cumberland, England, and the next one in Canonbie,
Scotland, so they travelled back and forth, as many of them did at the time.
I was told that my LITTLE's were actually at one time Border Reivers. The
information on MY FORRESTER/LITTLE is at the end of Chapter "U" of the
Dodgson Manuscript.
My William Little was the son of Andrew Little and Mary Murray of Canonbie,
Dumfries, Scotland. He was born May 1, 1800 at Hillhead, Canonbie,
Dumfries, Scotland and came to Canada, settling in Chinguacousy Township,
Peel County, Ontario. He remarried a young Mary McKechnie two years after
arriving in Canada as a widower with a newborn and four young children.
With Mary, he had 8 more children, in addition to the five young children
he had with Eleonor Forrester.
In Chapter "P" of the Rutledge Manuscript, there is mention of "Jane"
daughter of William Little from Bewcastle; (not my William) Robert, son of
Christopher Little, etc. etc. In Chapter "S", there is mention of a James
LITTLE, s/o Archibald LITTLE of Saughtrees, Newcastle. I haven't read the
whole report thoroughly yet, but there is some interesting stuff, and
hopefully, will be of some help to someone on this list.
Thank you,
Bonnie Hoyer
