Hi Jane,

The first reference to our Littles was to an Abraham Little who appeared in Stafford County VA in 1692 when he was released from his indenture as a servant.

I have been unable to determine where in England he came from, although 90% of the indentured servants with known origins in Virginia in the 1600s came from within 75 miles of the port cities of London and Bristol.

There are three counties in England near London or Bristol where Abraham Littles were found in the 1600s: Wiltshire County, Bedford County, and Essex County.

We have a Little from Wiltshire Co England in our DNA project whose results match descendants of Littles from Surry Co VA and Pitt Co NC. There was a prominent Abraham Little in this VA/NC line, so this accounts for the Wiltshire connection.

I have not been able to find a Little from either Essex County England or from Bedford County England to sign up for DNA testing (at my expense). A match with Littles in these counties would confirm our origins as Essex or Bedford Co.

There were several Abraham Littles in Cumberland Co Engand. They would be part of the "Borders Littles" at http://www.geocities.com/littlednaproject/Borders.htm and among the Littles in orange at http://www.geocities.com/littlednaproject/results.htm.

I suspect over 50% of the Littles in the world today have their origins in the Borders region of Scotland and England, but DNA testings shows they are not our Littles.

Given time, I think we'll find out where most of our Littles came from.

Best Regards, Leo

Leo,
Do you have a map of the area where our Little's lived before coming to
America? I am referring to our first Little immigrant to your and my family
of Little's, Abraham Little who came from an island off of England? Was it
anywhere close to this area that you are talking about in this e-mail in
Scotland, the borders area? I would love to see a map of the area where
Abraham Little lived before coming to America.
Thanks,
Your cousin,
Jane Little McEndree

Hi Robyn,

I don't see a listing in the 1841 Scottish or 1841 English census for a
Robert Little, born about 1831, who was the son of William Little with wife
Helen.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp does not show a
Robert Little, son of William Little and Helen in Scotland. Nor does it
show a William Little married to Helen Graham. The familysearch records are
based on Scottish parish records, though not everyone registered their
births and marriages.

However, the surnames LITTLE and GRAHAM were quite numerous in the West
Marches of the Borders region of Scotland in the 1600s and 1700s. See
http://www.geocities.com/littlednaproject/borders.jpg for an appropriate
map.

See also http://www.geocities.com/littlednaproject/Borders.htm for an
article, "Tracing the Borders Littles through DNA Testing". The chances are
quite good that your Littles originated in the Borders region, eventhough
there is no specific record of them.

Best Regards, Leo

Hello,

I am looking for any information about William LITTLE and Helen GRAHAM.
I am presuming they are from Scotland and I have details about 1 son,
Robert LITTLE who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland,
17 October 1831.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers
