Subject: [LOCKE-L] Virus warning. This is no joke.
Date: Wed, 3 Nov 1999 09:07:29 -0500

I think I may have bumped into a relatively new "anti-Microsoft" virus on
my home computer. My girlfriend received an email (in her Yahoo account)
from some unknown individual. She asked me what it was, being lazy and
foolish, I asked her to forward it to my account (which uses MS Outlook to
view my e-mail). It seems that when I deleted the email (after viewing the
contents) MS Win98 started showing up with corrupted files. The good news
about this is that I view my email after I hang up from my internet
provider, so it could not spread any further, so it is pretty much contained
to my computer. My girlfriends computer had a few bad clusters appear, but
they were easily removed with a Dos run scandisk. It seems that the virus
has the traits of the "Melissa" virus (in the fact that it procreates in MS
Outlook, but does not really affect non-Microsoft Outlook e-mail viewing
machines) but is changed enough to be able to pass through a virus scan that
has been updated two months ago. I know I should have written down the
originating e-mail address, but again being lazy and foolish, I did not. I
will be trying to find out what this little bug was, and when I do, pass the
information onto Yahoo and the rest of you.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reply to this message.
