Hi, Judie!
Victor M. (Moreau or Murat) LOCKE was the son of Benjamin Franklin
LOCKE, Sr. and Mary (SHARP) LOCKE - Benjamin was a LOCKE, and Mary's
maiden name was SHARP (daughter of Elisha Huff SHARP and Eleanor
"Ellen" (HUFF) SHARP.
Mary's family had a habit of including the grandparent's last name
somewhere within a child's name - for example, Mary's father was
named Elisha Huff SHARP - his father was named for his mother's last
name. (Don't EVEN ask how the HUFF name was related between Elisha
Huff SHARP and his wife, Eleanor HUFF - I don't know, lol!). That was
continued down to one of Mary's sons - my grandfather - Elisha Sharp
LOCKE, who got his grandfather's first name as *his* first name, and
his grandfather's last name as *his* middle name. Talk about a
research nightmare in some ways, yet in other ways it has been a tool
to help trace backwards! Also, it seems that information provided by
the WOMEN in the family usually referenced ancestors by the woman's
maiden name - so, Benjamin and Mary LOCKE was transposed many times to
Benjamin and Mary SHARP. This HAS been nothing BUT a nightmare, lol!
Add to that, the use of 'nicknames' instead of first names, and you
have a real wonderful mix...
The William LOCKE mentioned was the son of Thomas LOCKE (Sr.?) and
Susanna HENRY, and was brother to Benjamin Franklin LOCKE, Sr. (who
was Victor M. LOCKE, Sr.'s father). This William LOCKE was born in
Botetourt County, Virginia in 1783, moved with the family to Sevier
County, Tennessee in about 1807, where he remained until his death in
1835. He was a brother to Benjamin Franklin LOCKE, Sr. and an uncle
to Ben's son, Victor M. LOCKE, Sr. I have *no* information showing
William ever being married, or if so, to who. 'Family Stories' say
that he was a bachelor. I have *no* information ever showing him to
have ever been in North Carolina, either.
Now, as to where Victor M. LOCKE, Sr. lived - he was born in Decatur,
Meigs County, TN around the are known as "Ten Mile", and lived there
until after the Civil War. He and two brothers set out for Indian
Territory (Oklahoma) in the late 1860's. Victor married Susan P.
McKinney at Skelton Depot, Lukfata, Indian Territory (McCurtain Co.
OK) in 1871, then moved around that general area of Southeast
Oklahoma. He and his family settled in an area that would become
Antlers, OK - founded by Victor. TO the best of my knowledge, he
remained in the Antlers area until his death.
Hope this helps!
