Hi Listers
Now not a lot o'people know this <In Michael Caine accent>
The PRO at Kew is near to overflowing with Railway Co. records. They are indexed in some detail by David T Hawkings in his mighty tome, "Railway Ancestors".
Library Class Ref: 929.342
ISBN 0-7509-0883-1
>From the examples he gives of the types of record held they may provide undreamed of glimpses into the lives and characters of your railworker ancestors. Not all of the records have survived, of course, but those that have are full of amazing and sometimes intimate detail.
Staff records, exam papers, disciplinary hearings, letters, job applications, job references, photographs, court statements, wages, accident victims (civilian as well as servants), sickness records, sports reports, union meetings, magazines. 100's and 100's of volumes of the stuff. Some of it in far greater detail than some military records.
A must I think.
