Thought you may be interested in research carried out in 1991 by a Dr Malcolm
Hough regarding the distance from which Bow Bells may be heard. His findings
were based on weather and wind data and an estimation of background noise,
which he calculated to be 50 decibels by day and 30 by night in the days of
horses and carts, and 60 and 45 decibels respectively in modern times. Using
this information Bow Bells would be heard only in the immediate vicinity of
the Church by day in modern times and as far as Spitalfields, Shoreditch,
Southwark by night. However, in the days before the advent of the infernal
combustion engine they could be heard as far as Hackney Marshes, Camden,
Regents Park, Lambeth and Bermondsey by night.
I would just like to add that I am a newcomer to this list and the world of
genealogy in general, and I must say that I find all the correspondence on the
list extremely interesting and entertaining. I would very much like to hear
from anyone who has any interest in my own family names which are:
BEAZLEY (Bethnal Green/Shoreditch)
MILLER (Bethnal Green)
MUNNIKHUIZEN (Bethnal Green/Shoreditch)
CHUMLEY (Bethnal Green)
SHERRIFF (Stoke Newington)
Cheers!
