Hi Carole Beth,

it's normally a surname. I've personally never come across it as a given name.
Usually, I find, names like that are taken from, perhaps a mother's maiden
name, or, in the case of illegitimacy, the surname of the natural father used
as a given name. Then they become a name to be handed down within the family.
