Hi Jan
You were enquiring about weavers in Shoreditch.
As I understand the weaving industry around that time was what we would now
call a cottage industry. It would seem to have started with the Huegenot
refugees who settled around Spitalfields and spread out to Bethnal Green and
Shoreditch. I think you will find that most people who have ancestors from
around that area will have some who were silk weavers. No doubt there were
some persons around who were the wholesalers of the day but the idea of
factory working at that time would have been unknown. There are still some
weavers cottages around in Bethnal Green with the large first floor
windows, and if you contact the East of London Family History Society I am
sure they will give you more information as there have been a number of
articles in their house magazine over the years.
