Thanks for the corrections...

Would it be more precise to say that in the example shown that 1493 is the
PRO "piece" number, rather than the film number ?. Perhaps each piece is on
a single film in the PRO series, hence it means the same thing depending on
the media being accessed, whereas the LDS may have a piece on one or more
films, or parts of one or more pieces on a single film.

On the films that I have viewed, using the above example for an 1851 census
reference,

HO107/1493 (with 1493 being the piece number) appears at the bottom of each
sheet

65 being the folio number has been usually hand stamped anywhere along the
top of a sheet.

In addition a page number was printed with each book produced. The page
number was used in the 1881 census index produced by the LDS with the
assistance of thousands of helpers. Most other indexes for my areas of
interest don't include the page number. Some have r & v, but without these
it does not take long to find the entries from the references given in an
index.
